Facility Overview

The Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory (EMCL) serves as a resource center for scanning and transmission electron microscopy; providing investigators with consultation, training, access to instrumentation, and services for preparation and examination of both biological and environmental samples for transmission and field emission scanning electron microscopy. This includes conventional and microwave sample preparation, pre/post-embedding cytochemical and immunocytochemical localizations, whole mount preparations, critical point drying, vacuum evaporation and sputter coating.

Specific Aims

The specific aims of the EMCL are:

  • To provide investigators with access to microscopy instruments necessary for ultrastructural research in all the STEM areas.

  • To train faculty, staff, and students on relevant methods in ultrastructural research.

  • To help faculty, staff, and students on relevant approaches to address research questions involving morphological characterization.

  • To improve JSU competitiveness in the innovative field of electron microscopy-based research.

Resources and Environment

The EMCL is located in the John A. Peoples (JAP) Building. The current resources in facility include:   

  • JEOL-1011Transmission Electron Microscope System, equipped with is 0.2 nm lattice resolution with magnification of 50 to 1,000,000 under the accelerating voltage of 40 to 100 kV, a camera system, and a computer with LC monitor for image analysis.

  • Quanta 200 ESEM Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) equipped with several components including the: Quanta 200 environmental scanning electron microscope, CCD IR inspection camera, and Pentium PC with LCD monitor for image analysis.
