Welcome to the Department of Biology's Web Site in the School of Science & Technology. This site has information about our undergraduate and graduate programs. We hope what you find is beneficial in helping you make an informed decision about your academic career. Biology courses were
taught by four faculty members in a sub area within the Area of Science
and Mathematics in 1950 at Jackson College. The Department of Biology
was officially established in 1957 when the college organized a new School
of Liberal Arts. Continuous growth has been evident through the addition
of faculty members with various research specialties. The acquisition
of state-of-the-art equipment in multi-user facilities has also greatly
enhanced the research capabilities of the department. National recognition
was achieved in 2000 through a citation in “Black Issues in Higher
Education” who reported that the department ranked 3rd in the nation
in the production of African Americans who earned the baccalaureate in
biology. Currently, the department has over 700 majors and 23 faculty
members making it the largest department on campus. For additional information
