Welcome

The Department of Chemistry, one of the fastest growing chemistry departments in the country, offers excellent programs and training opportunities for our diverse student body.  The Department is one of the best kept secrets in the nation for being the most published Chemistry Departments among all HBCUs as well as among the eight Universities in the State of Mississippi.

The Department offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs with 20 outstanding faculty members.  The BS degree program is certified by the American Chemical Society with several career options: biomedical science, environmental science, forensic science, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, and pre-engineering. 75% of our graduates have been accepted by graduate and professional schools.

As one of the three PhD degree granting Chemistry Departments among the nation’s 117 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), we strive to build the best PhD program in the country that fosters a culture and environment conducive for underrepresented monitories, especially African Americans, to become the leading scientists in the chemistry related fields.  Our program has strong computational chemistry, nanomaterials science, and biomedical science research built based upon the traditional areas of chemistry:  analytical chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and chemical toxicology.

We offer various training programs that provide scholarships, fellowships, internships, etc. for our students. For further information, please contact the Department office at 601-979-2171.
