Photochromic compounds are those which undergo a reversible color change with light, while thermochromic compounds are ones which change color reversibly as a function of change of temperature. Such color changes are usually quite marked, involving low-energy crystalline phase transitions and concomitant changes in their electronic and magnetic structure as a function of temperature in the case of thermochromic compounds. In the case of photochromic compounds, the display of the phenomenon is also structure-sensitive and involves solid-state islocations, impurities, and lattice defects.  Current work will focus on model systems and precursor materials. This work will evolve from our investigations in "molecular recognition", in that the structure and properties of molecular assemblies may alternatively be discovered or designed taking advantage of hydrogen bonding arrays.
