Computer science combines
the intellectual challenge of a new discipline
with the excitement of being part of an
innovative and rapidly expanding technology. The
Jackson State University (JSU) Department of
Computer Science was established in 1972 as a
part of the Division of Natural Sciences. Over
the years, our growth has accelerated steadily
making us currently one of the largest
departments at the University.
The
Computer Science Department strives to be
responsive to the educational needs of its
students, offering both
B.S. and
M.S. degrees. The programs combine a very
thorough preparation in the fundamentals of
computing and related fields with the
opportunity for more advanced work in Computer
Science, Information Systems and Computational
Science.
The teaching and research facilities of the
Computer Science Department are housed in the
John A. Peoples Science Building. The Department
features state-of-the-art resources, including
multimedia and high performance computers, all
connected to the campus network, the Internet,
and the World Wide Web. There are also research
labs for artificial intelligence, distributed
systems, parallel processing and geographic
information systems/remote sensing (GIS/RS).
Jackson State University has established a
reputation for producing an ever-increasing
quantity and quality of graduates in computer
science. Our graduates are offered employment by
major companies and government agencies, as well
as opportunities to continue their studies in
graduate programs. The Department seeks students
who share our appreciation and desire for
intellectual inquiry and challenge. The programs
further seek to provide learning experiences and
activities designed to help students choose and
initiate careers that contribute to the social,
cultural and economical development of the state
and the nation.
