Hi… I am Dr. Marcus Chanay, Vice President for the Office of Student Life. Thank you for visiting our website. The Office of Student Life includes 14 departments and a staff –more than 100 strong all dedicated to making sure JSU students receive the services and support they need to excel academically.

We also encourage you to GET INVOLVED and take advantage of all that JSU has to offer to make the most of your college experience. With more than 120 student organizations to join ranging from academic clubs, spiritual and cultural organizations, political clubs, SGA and our Greek letter organizations, getting involved will be rewarding and fun.

From the 90,000 square foot Walter Payton Recreational Center to our 250,000 square foot Student Center, we offer first class amenities available to you here at JSU.

Our Career Services Center will help you prepare a professional resume, polish your interviewing skills, take advantage of internship opportunities, and help you with job placement. Through our Center for Community Service and Service-Engaged Learning, you will also have many opportunities to volunteer and explore the challenges of service learning. You may choose to participate in AmeriCorps, the National Student Exchange Program, or the Alternative Spring Break, just to name a few.

At JSU, nearly 2500 students live on campus in one of our eight (8) residence halls, managed by Housing/Residence Life. We continually engage our students in development and opportunities for leadership through our Center for Student Leadership and Involvement. At JSU, we want to ensure all students are engaged in activities on campus, so we provide a Veteran Services program and a Center for Institutional Diversity.

The Office of Student Life works diligently to ensure that we provide services and activities designed to meet the needs of every student. Our goal is to assist students to achieve success while supported in a positive and progressive environment. Dr. Marcus A. Chanay was appointed Vice President for Student Life at Jackson State University effective July 1, 2011. His appointment was approved and confirmed by the Board of Trustees, Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning at the June 2011 board meeting. He supports both the academic mission of Jackson State University and the Office of Student Life. As Vice President for Student Life and a member of the President's Cabinet he reports directly to the President. In this position, Dr. Chanay is responsible for fostering an atmosphere conducive to the pursuit of knowledge, basic rights and responsibilities by providing disciplinary standards that are in the best interest of the University. He provides leadership for 108 professional staff members. He is responsible for the oversight of the following areas: Dean of Student Life, Diversity Inclusion Program, Housing/Residence Life, Center for Service and Community Engaged Learning, TRIO Programs, Student Center, Health Services, Student Publications and Student Life Marketing, Center for Student and Employees with Disabilities Services, Campus Union Hotel, Jacob Reddix Office Complex, Latasha Norman Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, Center for Student Leadership and Involvement, Judicial Services, and Walter Payton Recreation and Wellness Center.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Chanay served as the Associate Vice President for Student Life from July 2008 to June 2011. He supported both the academic mission of Jackson State University and the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Student Life. As the Associate Vice President, he reported to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Life.

From August 2004 to June 2008, Dr. Chanay served as the Dean of Student Life. In this position, he was responsible for the implementation of programs, services, resources, and advocated for the needs and interests of all students at Jackson State University and oversaw a budget of $2,700,000.00 a year. He was also responsible for the oversight of the following areas: Student Life HIV/AIDS Project, Student Publications, Rose E. McCoy Auditorium, Campus Union Hotel, Center for Student Leadership and Involvement, Judicial Services, Campus Ministry Programming, Student Government Association, JSU Mascot/Baby Tigers, and JSU Cheerleaders.

Prior to being named Dean of Student Life, Dr. Chanay served as the Director of the Personal Development and Assessment Center (2002-2004) and as the Program Development Specialist and Director of Business and Community Service in the Division of Continuing Education (2001-2002) at Jackson State University.

In 2008, Dr. Chanay was selected to the Institute for New Student Affairs Officers. He has demonstrated leadership skills not only on campus, but in the community. He is a member of several local and national boards which include the American Cancer Society, the International Visitors' Center of Jackson, the Jackson State University Interdisciplinary Alcohol/Drug Studies Center Advisory Board (IADSC), the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP), and the 100 Black Men, Inc. of Jackson to name a few.

Dr. Chanay is very active in several professional organizations which include the Association for Student Conduct Administration, the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). He is also an active member of Cade Chapel M.B. Church.

Dr. Chanay holds degrees from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (B.A.), Mass Communications and from Jackson State University (M.S.), Educational Administration and Supervision. He received his Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University with his dissertation: The impact of Selected Student Service Programs on Participation and Satisfaction: A Black University Perspective. Dr. Chanay has made presentations on the state, regional and national levels on topics ranging from student attrition and retention to enhancing the quality of services to students.

A native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Dr. Chanay is married to the former Chiquita Munir and they are the proud parents of two sons, Marcus A. Chanay, Jr. and Marquis, and three daughters, Whitney, Ruqayya and MacKenzie.
