The CASE Festival will focus on the legacy of Margaret Walker, Black women writers, and the 50th anniversary of the Phillis Wheatley Poetry Festival at Jackson State.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/art\/files\/2023\/01\/CASE_Creative-Arts_2020_logo_BW.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1063 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/art\/files\/2023\/01\/CASE_Creative-Arts_2020_logo_BW-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"176\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 228px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 228\/176;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1063 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/art\/files\/2023\/01\/CASE_Creative-Arts_2020_logo_BW-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"176\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Proposals must be submitted by\u00a0Saturday,\u00a0March 18, 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year, CASE will feature a keynote address by Dr. Maryemma Graham, Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Kansas and biographer of Margaret Walker. Although the focus is on Black women writers, the organizers welcome proposals from students on any topic.<\/p>\n<p>Proposal submissions should be 250 words, include a title and name of the participant\u2019s school, and should fit in one of four categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Poetry\/Spoken Word (10-15-minute presentations in original storytelling or poetry, including brief comments about inspiration &amp;\/or form of the work)<\/li>\n<li>Visual Arts (up to 3 pieces of artwork in any media with 10-minute presentations)<\/li>\n<li>Written (8- to 10-page essays with 20-minute presentations)<\/li>\n<li>Performing Arts (10-minute dance, musical, and theatrical presentations)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the case of panel proposals, please submit the names of the participants and provide a brief synopsis of the panel\u2019s topic and provide individual paper or presentation proposals. To submit a proposal, please send a document in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mwa@jsums.edu\">mwa@jsums.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact the\u00a0Margaret\u00a0Walker\u00a0Center\u00a0(<a href=\"mailto:mwa@jsums.edu\">mwa@jsums.edu<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<u>601-979-3935<\/u>) or the Conference Coordinator, Dr. Robert Luckett (<a href=\"mailto:robert.luckett@jsums.edu\">robert.luckett@jsums.edu<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note that the best essay by a JSU student on the \u201cBlack experience in the American South\u201d will receive the\u00a0<strong>$1,000 Margaret Walker Annual Award.\u00a0<\/strong>Submissions for the Margaret Walker Annual Award can be in various forms, including literary analysis, creative writing, research paper, biographical study, autobiography, and historical study. JSU students who would like to be considered for this award\u00a0<em>must submit\u00a0<\/em>their 8- to 10-page essays by\u00a0Thursday, March 30, and\u00a0<em>present<\/em>\u00a0their papers during the CASE Festival\u00a0on Saturday, April 15.<\/p>\n<p>We will also present the annual\u00a0<strong>$500 Doris Derby Visual Arts and Social Justice Award<\/strong>\u00a0to a student at any level from any institution whose contribution best reflects this year\u2019s CASE Festival theme in the category of visual arts, including\u00a0painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, and crafts.\u00a0Students must present their artwork during the CASE Festival on Saturday, April 15, to be eligible for the award.<\/p>\n<p>Winners for all awards will be announced during the Closing Ceremony for the 2023 CASE Festival.<\/p>\n<p>This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part, from the National Endowment for the\u00a0Arts, a federal agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Margaret Walker Center invites proposals from high school, undergraduate, and graduate students for papers, presentations, and panels for the hybrid 17th Annual Creative Arts &amp; Scholarly Engagement (CASE) Festival, scheduled for\u00a0Friday and Saturday, April 14 &amp; 15, 2023.
