JSU extends spring break in response to coronavirus

Jackson State University joins Mississippi’s other public universities by modifying class schedules for the 2020 spring semester to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, thus resulting in the extension of spring break by one week. All classes will resume, the following week, on Monday, March 23 and will be taught online and via other alternative instructional methods.

JSU has assembled a JSU Coronavirus Response team of diverse campus personnel to create and execute its plan to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on the HBCU campus. Acting President Thomas K. Hudson said these measures coincide with ongoing efforts to protect the campus community.

“Our top priority is the health, safety and well-being of our total campus community,” Thomas said. “During this extended break, students are encouraged to remain at home and not return to the residence hall. However JSU will accommodate those students who wish to return.”

According to information from the Institutions of Higher Learning, “Students will not be required to attend in-person classes. There will be some exceptions for students enrolled in professional and graduate schools who need to meet clinical and other requirements.”

Dining facilities and residence halls are currently open and will remain so. Students will not be required to attend in-person classes. Students and their families can determine whether to remain at home or return to campus.

Also, the university has expanded its existing travel restrictions to include ALL university related travel, regardless of mode of transport. These restrictions will take effect immediately and will last indefinitely.
