{"id":5,"date":"2010-03-15T21:56:19","date_gmt":"2010-03-15T21:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/emfl\/?page_id=5"},"modified":"2020-04-10T04:32:35","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T04:32:35","slug":"mission","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/english\/mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\"><strong>The area of English at <\/strong><strong>Jackson <\/strong><strong>State <\/strong><strong>University <\/strong><strong>has established these major objectives:<\/strong><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To help students develop the ability to read, think, and write clearly and critically.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To help students understand and appreciate good writing and literature.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To help students become aware of the truth, beauty, and wisdom of our culture to the extent that they are able to make value judgments about the society in which they live.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To prepare students for teaching English and for other career roles in society.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To provide the necessary courses for all students to fulfill state and university requirements.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To encourage students to engage in creative and scholarly writing.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\"><strong>The primary objectives of general foreign language instruction at <\/strong><strong>Jackson <\/strong><strong>State <\/strong><strong>University <\/strong><strong>are those shared by most foreign language departments today:<\/strong><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To teach the student the fundamental skills of speaking, reading, and writing in the foreign language.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To help the student develop an understanding of and a respect for another culture.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To give the student an awareness and appreciation of the aesthetic and intellectual history of the target culture and of its present day manifestations.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To help the student comprehend, analyze, and explicate literary works in the foreign language.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To help the student acquire command of the target language as a tool for written and oral communication.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\">To provide for the student&#039;s training so that he\/she is capable of teaching and transmitting to others the aforementioned skills, attitudes, and abilities.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p>\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size: medium\"><strong>The area of Speech Communications has established these major objectives:<\/strong><\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">To provide comprehensive training in communicative arts and science.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">To develop comprehensive aesthetic awareness and interaction among students, faculty, and community.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">To present forensic activities.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">To offer practical communicative experiences through laboratory activities, problem solving exercises, internships, and independent study.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The area of English at Jackson State University has established these major objectives: To help students develop the ability to read, think, and write clearly and critically.
