The Institute of International Education (IIE) administers the Boren Scholarships and Fellowships on behalf of the National Security Education Program. IIE is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building international goodwill through educational and cultural exchange among nations. By enabling more than 18,000 outstanding men and women each year to study, conduct research, receive practical training, or provide technical assistance outside their own countries, IIE fosters mutual understanding, builds global problem-solving capabilities, and strengthens the international competence of U.S. citizens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Boren Award is a scholarship for eligible undergraduate and graduate students. Up to $25,000 awarded for overseas study. The Boren is also a great way to get started in a career with the U.S. government.<\/span><\/p>\n

AIFS Study Abroad<\/span><\/i><\/a> has been around since 1964 and provides study abroad and internship options for students from all majors. Our programs are all inclusive (tuition, housing, meal plan, excursions, insurance, pre-departure support, and alumni programming) and offer an optional transportation package which includes round-trip airfare and ground transportation to\/from the airport. We offer options ranging from two weeks to a year in more than 30 cities around the world as well as multi-destination study and travel programs in the summer which focus on different subjects.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

We know that affording study abroad can be a big part of the process and are happy to accept financial aid, the GI Bill, and outside scholarships. We also have our own <\/span><\/i>scholarships and grants<\/span><\/i><\/a> available \u2013 each year more than 50% of our program participants receive a grant or scholarship from AIFS to participate on our programs. We encourage students to check out the <\/span><\/i>Boren Awards<\/span><\/i><\/a>, the <\/span><\/i>Gilman Scholarship<\/span><\/i><\/a>, and opportunities through the <\/span><\/i>Fund for Education Abroad<\/span><\/i><\/a> as they can be used on our programs and we provide a grant for recipients of these scholarships. We also have <\/span><\/i>amended our refund policy<\/span><\/i><\/a> to provide greater flexibility during these times of uncertainty.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program places recent college graduates in paid English teaching positions in Japan. Each year, over 1,000 Americans are selected from around the country. They work for periods of 1-5 years as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) alongside trained Japanese teachers in primary and secondary schools. All majors are considered for this program, and Japanese language is not required. The primary requirements are a college degree and a strong interest in both teaching and Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

At least one graduate of Jackson State University is currently participating in this highly selective program. The current COVID-19 pandemic has delayed this year\u2019s application process slightly, but we will be recruiting applicants to join the program in the summer of 2021. Operation Wallacea has run biodiversity research expeditions for the last 25 years to a series of sites mainly in the tropics (www.opwall.com), helping university students from around the world gain valuable experience and get their hands dirty with real biodiversity research. From tropical rainforests and European grasslands to coral reefs and Mediterranean seagrass meadows, our network of more than 200 academics lead cutting edge research projects that help to inform local conservation management strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

More than 500 papers including some in high impact journals such as Nature and PNAS have been published from these annual programs, so by joining the field surveys you are guaranteed a high level of academic involvement. By working alongside these academics, students either gain broad experience as research assistants or to gather data for their independent research project (thesis).
