Comprehensive examinations are a time-honored tradition for testing a graduate student\u2019s mastery of disciplinary knowledge.You should view your comprehensive examination as a challenge worthy of your hard work.\u00a0 As you prepare, you will not only become aware of how much you have learned, but you will also reach a better understanding of all that you have learned.\u00a0 Education and what may seem to be difficult experiences change people.\u00a0 Changes allow for personal growth and broadened horizons.\u00a0 Comps should be an important and welcomed part of that growth!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Eligibility<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><strong>Students should consult with department chairs or academic deans for specific departmental and college requirements and number of examinations offered per year.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A.\u00a0 Master Level<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completing 24 semester hours of graduate coursework with a 3.0 grade point average.<\/li>\n<li>Completion of the Graduate English Competency Examination, (GECE) requirement.<\/li>\n<li>The student must be registered for at least one credit hour in the semester which the examination will be given.\u00a0 An audited course will not meet this requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>B.\u00a0 Doctoral<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completing of 80% of required graduate coursework with a 3.0 grade point average.<\/li>\n<li>The student must be registered for at least one credit hour in the semester which the examination will be given.\u00a0 An audited course will not meet this requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>C.\u00a0 Specialist in Education<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completing 24 semester hours of graduate coursework with a 3.0 grade point average.<\/li>\n<li>The student must be registered for at least one credit hour in the semester which the examination will be given.\u00a0 An audited course will not meet this requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Policies and Procedures<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Students may not take the exam as a walk-in.<\/li>\n<li>Students who miss the registration deadline must apply to take the examination at the next scheduled date.<\/li>\n<li>Student failing to take the examination on the date, must re-apply by the deadline on a subsequent test date.<\/li>\n<li>Students may attempt the examination twice.<\/li>\n<li>Students unsuccessful twice on the examination must petition the Academic College Dean for permission to take the exam a third attempt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Students should register for the Examination via PAWS at the time of registration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Master&#8217;s level GACE: Please register for GNST 555<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Specialist level GACE: Please register for GNST 666<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Doctoral level GACE: Please register for GNST 888<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><em>Preparing for the GACE<\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask \u2013 some comps are standardized, some are personalized.<\/li>\n<li>Ask \u2013 what format is being used, computer-based or pen and paper,\u00a0 short answer or long essay?<\/li>\n<li>Ask \u2013 if the comp is personalized, get some idea of the content.<\/li>\n<li>Ask \u2013 are past exams available?<\/li>\n<li>Ask \u2013 other students.<\/li>\n<li>Read &amp; review.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em>Taking the GACE<\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Budget your time<\/li>\n<li>Remember this examination is a test of your ability as an intellectual.<\/li>\n<li>As part of the answer you should \u201ccompare, contrast, synthesize, analyze, integrate information\u201d not regurgitate.<\/li>\n<li>Try to relax.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Few words strike fear and panic into graduate students as readily as the words \u201carea comps\u201d.\u00a0 Comprehensive examinations are a challenge, they test intellectual capacity, nerve, endurance, and fortitude.
