The department also offers students in other disciplines\/majors an opportunity to pursue a minor in History in the areas of History, Public History, and African Diaspora History.<\/p>\n<p>The B.A. degree program allows students to engage in in-depth study and research of historical and cultural events to explore their heritage, while giving them the problem-solving skills to use in the complex world in which they live and the capabilities to succeed in professional careers in law, business, literature, media entertainment, and government agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The B.S. degree program is designed for those who have a desire to become licensed teachers. This program will create a strong foundation by combining history and education courses and provide the knowledge and skills needed in the academic profession.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><u>CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS FOR MAJORS<\/u><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Along with the major degree courses (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/studentsuccess\/uaac\/\">Bachelor of Arts Degree Map or Bachelor of Science Degree Map<\/a>), students are required to complete a total of 30 credit hours in General Education Core (GEC) courses:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"234\"><strong>REQUIREMENT<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"120\"><strong>CREDIT HOURS<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"234\">Communication<\/td>\n<td width=\"120\">6<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"234\">Humanities &amp; Fine Arts<\/td>\n<td width=\"120\">9<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"234\">Mathematics<\/td>\n<td width=\"120\">3<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"234\">Natural Sciences<\/td>\n<td width=\"120\">6<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"234\">Social and Behavioral Sciences<\/td>\n<td width=\"120\">6<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"234\"><strong>TOTAL<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"120\"><strong>30<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For a listing of all GEC courses, please view <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/studentsuccess\/degree-and-majors\/\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>IMPORTANT: Students who transfer twelve (12) or more hours of college credit are exempt from UNIV 100: UNIVERSITY SCCUESS; however, students must take two (2) credit hours of general electives to replace the UNIV course.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>All History majors<\/u><\/strong> must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>receive a minimum grade of \u201cC\u201d in any History course to count towards the degree requirements;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">and<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have at least a 2.0 GPA to be enrolled in HIST 344: HISTORIGRAPHY or HIST 447: RESEARCH SEMINAR <em>(Note: HIST 344 and HIST 447 must be taken in sequence, and each course will be offered only once annually.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, <strong><u>Bachelor of Science History majors<\/u><\/strong> must also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>apply for admission to<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/teacherquality\/admission\/\">Teacher Education<\/a>(Social Science)<\/strong> at the end of their sophomore year.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">apply for admission to<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/teacherquality\/admission\/\">Student Teaching<\/a>(Social Science)<\/strong> in their senior year.<\/li>\n<li>view the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/education\/general-disclosure-and-licensure\/\"><strong>Licensure Disclosure<\/strong><\/a> for History Education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><u>COURSES REQUIREMENTS FOR HISTORY MINOR<\/u><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Department of History and Philosophy requires at least 18 credit hours for a History minor in the areas of History, Public History, or African Diaspora History. \u00a0For a listing of courses for each area, please view <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/history\/files\/2026\/10\/History-Minor-Course-Requirements.pdf\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of History and Philosophy offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in History. \u00a0A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to complete the undergraduate degree programs.
