{"id":118,"date":"2020-05-21T17:57:53","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T17:57:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/cyberawareclone-demo\/?page_id=118"},"modified":"2025-09-23T16:26:59","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T16:26:59","slug":"student-ferpa-rights","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/jsu-cyber-security\/student-ferpa-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Student FERPA Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ou-intro\">\n<h5><b>What is FERPA?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b> <\/b>The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. \u00a7 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"ou-intro\"><b>What Rights Do Current &amp; Former Students Have Under FERPA?<\/b><\/h5>\n<h5><strong><em>Students have four basic rights under FERPA:<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The right to\u00a0inspect and review the student\u2019s education records within 30 days of the day the College receives a request for access.<\/li>\n<li>The right to\u00a0 request the amendment of the student\u2019s education records that the student believes are inaccurate or misleading.<\/li>\n<li>The right to overturn disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in the student\u2019s education records, except to the extent that FERPA or any superseding law authorizes disclosure without the student\u2019s consent.<\/li>\n<li>The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures of the College to\u00a0comply with the requirements of FERPA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h5><b><i>FERPA\u00a0 Privacy Rights for Students:<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>A student has the right to request their directory information not be released<\/li>\n<li>Students must submit a request in writing to withhold disclosure of their directory information<\/li>\n<li>Non disclosure\u00a0 of directory information will remain effective until the student submits a written request specifying otherwise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"ou-intro\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is FERPA?
