The assessment is based on high standards developed by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The standards-based assessment requires candidates to create a classroom-based portfolio and complete a one-day written assessment. Call 1-800-22TEACH to request an NBPTS application.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of Becoming National Board Certified<\/h2>\n<p>\u2013 <strong>$6,000 annual bonus<\/strong> upon completion of certification<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 <strong>Fee reimbursement<\/strong>, if the process is completed<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 MS recertification\/renewal for 5 years, if the process is completed<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Professional growth and affirmation<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Leadership opportunities while remaining in the classroom<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Certification lasts for 10 years and may be renewed<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Mentoring support<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/lifelearning\/national-board-certification\/attachment-3-national-board-certification-flyer\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1909\">National Board Certification Flyer<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Southwest Mississippi World-Class Teaching Initiative (SMWCTI)<\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>The Southwest Mississippi World-Class Teaching Initiative (SMWCTI<\/em><\/strong>) is one of six World-Class Teaching Programs that support Mississippi teachers as they seek National Board Certification. The state of Mississippi funds the World-Class Teaching Initiative at university campuses, and Jackson State University (JSU) is one of the institutions funded to support teachers through the Southwest Mississippi World-Class Teaching Initiative. This initiative was established in 1996, and the first cohort of teachers matriculated through the SMWCTI and were certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).<\/p>\n<p>The Southwest Mississippi World-Class Teaching Initiative, at Jackson State University, is directed by Dr. Gloria Smith, who is assisted by <span lang=\"EN\">Ms. Carolyn Tillman<\/span>, and five (5) candidate support providers.\u00a0 <span lang=\"EN\">Ms. Tillman<\/span>, who serves as a facilitator, is responsible for monitoring the candidate support providers, recruiting, securing financial support, and providing relevant training and academic support for candidates.\u00a0 The candidate support providers for the initiative facilitate and support selected candidates through the National Board process.<\/p>\n<p>The Southwest Mississippi World-Class Teaching Initiative, at JSU, offers several different programs to meet the needs of teachers seeking National Board Certification (NBC).\u00a0 It guides and supports groups of selected candidates through the certification process. Ultimately, this program prepares leading teachers to take and pass the National Board Educator Exam.\u00a0 Outlined below are the programs offered through the SMWCTI to meet the needs of teachers seeking National Board Certification: <strong><em>Candidate Support Program and the National Board Standards Workshop.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/lifelearning\/files\/2012\/09\/Application-FormF.doc\">Click Here<\/a> to download the application form.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Candidate Support Program<\/em><\/strong> is the heart of the Southwest Mississippi World-Class Teaching Initiative.\u00a0 It guides and supports groups of selected candidates through the National Board Certification process.\u00a0 It consists of bi-monthly meetings with active candidates, their peers, and a National Board Certified Teacher.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/lifelearning\/files\/2021\/07\/Fall-2021-and-Spring-2022-Mentoring-Schedule.pdf\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1925\">Click Here<\/a> to view the mentoring Sessions<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The National Board Standards Workshop<\/em><\/strong> is a two-day workshop designed to provide instruction on the standards developed by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. During the standards workshop, teachers are introduced to the building blocks of the certification process: the Architecture of Accomplished Teaching, the Five Core Propositions, and the Standards for each certificate area.\u00a0 The workshop gives an overview of the National Board Certification process, which includes a detailed overview of the four components.
