The\u00a0Margaret\u00a0Walker\u00a0Center\u00a0invites proposals for papers,\u00a0presentations, and panels for the\u00a015th\u00a0<\/sup>Annual Creative\u00a0<\/em>Arts & Scholarly Engagement (CASE) Festival<\/strong>, scheduled to be held virtually on Friday and Saturday,\u00a0April 9 & 10<\/strong>,\u00a02021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Proposals must\u00a0be submitted by\u00a0Saturday,\u00a0March 6<\/strong>. Taking a cue from Kiese Laymon, the theme for the 2021 CASE is\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Bearing\/Baring the Weight\/Wait: The Struggle for Self-Actualization & Change in Mississippi.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0However, the organizers welcome proposals from high school, undergraduate, and graduate students on\u00a0any topic<\/em>. Due to COVID-19, the Spring 2021 CASE will be held virtually.<\/p>\n

Proposal submissions should be 250-500 words with a title for the work and the institutional affiliation of the presenter, and proposals should fit in one of four categories:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Poetry\/Spoken Word<\/strong>\u00a0(10-15-minute\u00a0presentations\u00a0in original storytelling or poetry with brief comments)<\/li>\n
  2. Visual\u00a0Arts<\/strong>\u00a0(up to 3 pieces of artwork in any media with 10-minute presentations)<\/li>\n
  3. Written<\/strong>\u00a0(10-page essays with 20-minute\u00a0presentations)<\/li>\n
  4. Performing\u00a0Arts\u00a0<\/strong>(10-minute dance, musical, and theatrical\u00a0presentations)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In the case of\u00a0panel proposals<\/em>, please submit the names of the participants and provide a brief synopsis of the panel\u2019s topic\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0provide individual paper or presentation proposals per the guidelines above.<\/p>\n

    Note that submissions in the written and poetry categories will be considered for publication, and the best essay by a JSU student on the \u201cblack experience in the American South\u201d will receive the\u00a0$1,000 Margaret Walker Annual Award<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong>Submissions for the Margaret Walker Award can be in various forms, including literary analysis, creative writing, original research, biographical study, autobiography, and historical study. JSU students who would like to be considered for this award\u00a0must submit\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>their 10-page essays by\u00a0Thursday, March 18,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<\/strong>present<\/em>\u00a0their papers at the virtual CASE\u00a0Festival\u00a0on\u00a0Saturday, April 10<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    For the first time, the 2021 CASE Festival will recognize the winner of the\u00a0Doris Derby Visual Arts and Social Justice Award<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. The\u00a0$500 prize\u00a0<\/strong>will be awarded\u00a0to a student at any level from any institution whose contribution best reflects this year\u2019s CASE theme in the category of visual arts, including but not limited to\u00a0painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts, and architecture. Like the Margaret Walker Award, students who would like to be considered must present their work during the virtual Festival.<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we will host the\u00a01st<\/sup>\u00a0John Jennings Art Contest<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0for a visual art piece that reflects the conference theme or Jennings\u2019 Fall 2020\u00a0talk<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>on \u201cCyborgs and Crossroads<\/span><\/a>.\u201d One award will go to a JSU student and another will go to a non-JSU (high school, undergraduate, or graduate) student. Award recipients must submit entries by\u00a0Thursday, March 18<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency; the Greater Jackson Arts Council; and in part, from\u00a0the National Endowment for the\u00a0Arts, a federal agency.<\/p>\n
