The 2022 CASE Festival will focus on music through the broad theme of <em>Past, Present, &amp; Future: A Legacy in Music<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals must be submitted by Monday, March 28, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This year, CASE will host a discussion with Mississippi music legends Cassandra Wilson, Nellie Mack, and Rhonda Richmond, as well as performances by the JSU Department of Music. Although the focus is on music, the organizers welcome proposals from <strong>high school, undergraduate, and graduate students<\/strong> on <strong>any topic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As a continuing consequence of COVID-19, the Spring 2022 CASE will be a hybrid event: held both <strong>in person<\/strong> on the JSU campus and<strong> virtually<\/strong> via the MWC\u2019s Facebook, YouTube, and Zoom platforms. Additional info regarding the virtual format and event registration will be shared in the new year.<\/p>\n<p>Proposal submissions should be 250-500 words, include a title and name of the participant\u2019s school, and should fit in one of four categories:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Poetry\/Spoken Word<\/strong>(10-15-minute\u00a0presentations\u00a0in original storytelling or poetry, including brief comments about inspiration &amp;\/or form of the work)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visual\u00a0Arts<\/strong>(up to 3 pieces of artwork in any media with 10-minute presentations)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Written<\/strong>\u00a0(8- to 10-page essays with 20-minute\u00a0presentations)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Performing\u00a0Arts\u00a0<\/strong>(10-minute dance, musical, and theatrical\u00a0presentations)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the case of <em>panel proposals<\/em>, please submit the names of the participants and provide a brief synopsis of the panel\u2019s topic <em>and<\/em> provide individual paper or presentation proposals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To submit a proposal, please send a document in Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF to <\/strong><a href=\"mailto:mwa@jsums.edu\">mwa@jsums.edu<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact the\u00a0Margaret\u00a0Walker\u00a0Center\u00a0(<a href=\"mailto:mwa@jsums.edu\">mwa@jsums.edu<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<u>601-979-3935<\/u>) or the Conference Coordinators, Dr. helen crump (<a href=\"mailto:helen.j.crump@jsums.edu\">helen.j.crump@jsums.edu<\/a>)\u00a0and Dr. Robert Luckett (<a href=\"mailto:robert.luckett@jsums.edu\">robert.luckett@jsums.edu<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Note that the best essay by a JSU student on the \u201cBlack experience in the American South\u201d will receive the\u00a0<strong>$1,000 Margaret Walker Annual Award. <\/strong>Submissions for the Margaret Walker Annual Award can be in various forms, including literary analysis, creative writing, research paper, biographical study, autobiography, and historical study. JSU students who would like to be considered for this award <strong><em>must submit <\/em>their 8- to 10-page<\/strong> <strong>essays<\/strong> by\u00a0<strong>Thursday, March 17,<\/strong><strong> and <em>present<\/em><\/strong> <strong>their papers<\/strong> during the CASE Festival\u00a0on <strong>Saturday, April 9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We will also present the annual <strong>$500 Doris Derby Visual Arts and Social Justice Award<\/strong> to a student at any level from any institution whose contribution best reflects this year\u2019s CASE Festival theme in the category of visual arts, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, and crafts. As a former staff member of Margaret Walker\u2019s Black Studies Institute (today the Margaret Walker Center), Dr. Derby contributed to some of the groundbreaking conferences hosted at Jackson State that served as inspiration for the CASE Festival, and she created this award to inspire others to give back.
