Free and open to the public, the<\/span><\/span> 2024 CASE Festival will feature members of<\/span> the<\/span>\u00a0Sonic Boom of\u00a0the<\/span> South\u2014Bryan McKinney, Justus Merkerson, Anthony Duncan, and Treasure White\u2014in an opening plenary conversation and reception in the<\/span> JSU Student Center Theater at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 5.\u00a0The <\/span>Sonic Boom made national headlines with a special appearance this year with eight-time Grammy-winning artist Usher during\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now, they have been invited to participate in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0136th Tournament of\u00a0Roses<\/span> Parade presented by Honda on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in Pasadena, California.<\/span><\/span>

Recognizing\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0significance of this venture, JSU has launched \u201cThee<\/span>\u00a0Road<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0Roses<\/span>\u201d fundraising campaign calling on\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0generosity of supporters, friends, fans and alumni to help\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Boom seize\u00a0the<\/span> monumental moment and perform on yet another national stage. Free and open to\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0public,\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0CASE Festival will host a special fundraising reception for\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Sonic Boom immediately following\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0conversation on\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a02nd floor of\u00a0the<\/span> JSU Student Center. The 2024 CASE Festival will close with a conversation about the legacy of Margaret Walker And Sonia Sanchez, world-renowned poet, mother, and professor, who is known for her insights into Black culture and literature, women\u2019s liberation, peace, and racial justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

Winners for all awards will also be announced during the Closing Ceremony for the 2024 CASE Festival.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0best essay by a JSU student on\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0\u201cBlack experience in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0American South\u201d will receive\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0$1,000 Margaret Walker Annual Award<\/b>. Submissions for\u00a0the<\/span> Margaret Walker Annual Award can be in various forms, including literary analysis, creative writing, research paper, biographical study, autobiography, and historical study.<\/span><\/p>\n

The annual $500 Doris Derby Visual Arts and Social Justice Award<\/b> will be presented to a student at any level from any institution whose contribution best reflects this year\u2019s CASE Festival theme in the<\/span> category of visual arts, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, and crafts.<\/span><\/p>\n
