The story of Margaret Walker’s real-life grandmother and great-grandmother as they lived from slavery to freedom, Jubilee launched the genre of neo-slave narratives when it was published in 1966. With the support of the ASCEND Initiative ($125,000), two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts ($45,000), and a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ($100,000), faculty and students in music at Yale and Jackson State will rehearse and perform a concert production in New Haven and Jackson during the summer of 2026, marking the 60th anniversary of Jubilee. Dr. Albert Lee, Associate Professor in the Yale School of Music, and Dr. Phyllis Lewis-Hale, Associate Professor of Music at Jackson State, will be the lead faculty. The Folk Opera is the work of composer and pianist Randy Klein and librettist and playwright Joan Ross Sorkin, both of whom will coordinate the production through the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State. Internationally acclaimed conductor and composer Julius P. Williams will lead the symphonic interpretation of the music.

Work on the opera also coincides with the inaugural HBCU Opera and Musical Theater Summer Festival, a week-long festival at Jackson State featuring student participants from a variety of colleges and universities. The students will receive workshops and coaching from professionals in the opera industry, and they will work closely with Klein and Sorkin in advance of the debut of Jubilee: A Folk Opera.

The ultimate goal for Jubilee: A Folk Opera is to expand it into a full-scale, finished production to be performed nationwide.

To read Jackson State’s Press Release about the project, visit the JSU Newsroom.

Events

Concert Reading at Yale University, May 28, 2026, 7:30 p.m.

A work-in-progress concert reading of Jubilee: A Folk Opera will be presented on May 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dome in the Yale Schwarzman Center, 168 Grove Street New Haven, CT 06511. Established through the Mississippi Intercollegiate Opera Guild under the leadership of Sister Mary Elise Sisson and other visionary educators, OPERA/SOUTH became one of the nation’s most significant Black opera companies and a pioneering force for African American artists in classical music and opera.

The company gained national recognition for presenting culturally relevant productions, commissioning and premiering works by Black composers, and creating professional opportunities for Black singers, musicians, dancers, and technicians during a period when access to major opera stages remained limited. Over several decades, OPERA/SOUTH established Jackson as a center for African American operatic artistry. Founding supporters included prominent figures such as Sidney Poitier, Ossie Davis, and Margaret Walker.

In 2006, OPERA/SOUTH was revived at Jackson State, preserving the company’s educational and performance mission. Under the leadership of Dr. Phyllis Lewis-Hale, the modern OPERA/SOUTH revitalization initiative seeks to restore the organization as a nationally recognized HBCU-centered hub for opera, musical theater, cultural preservation, community engagement, and professional artist training.

Through local and national collaborations, the HBCU Opera & Musical Theater Summer Festival was created to support the mission of OPERA/SOUTH to cultivate artistic excellence, preserve cultural legacy, and build a nationally recognized HBCU-centered ecosystem for classical vocal and theatrical training. The week-long summer festival combines masterclasses, coaching, performances, career-building workshops, recitals, chamber orchestra collaborations, and the development of new works, including the
