The specific objectives of the department are to prepare students to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acquire the\u00a0professional skills necessary\u00a0to become professional counselors,<\/li>\n<li>Obtain\u00a0certification\u00a0in\u00a0school\u00a0counseling\u00a0or school psychometry, and<\/li>\n<li>Upgrade their certification and\/or skill level in counseling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>General Admission Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #009bde;\"><a style=\"color: #009bde;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/graduateschool\/prospective-students-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General and International Students<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Admission Requirements<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A master\u2019s degree from an accredited college or university<\/li>\n<li>An overall GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) on the master\u2019s degree<\/li>\n<li>A completed Specialist program application<\/li>\n<li>Three letters of recommendation<\/li>\n<li>Acceptable evidence of the applicant\u2019s writing ability as determined by a writing sample completed under the supervision of the screening committee<\/li>\n<li>A successful interview with the program screening committee<\/li>\n<li>A recommendation for admission by the screening committee<\/li>\n<li>Student must hold a valid teaching license<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Degree Requirements<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students are required to complete 42 semester hours, write a thesis, and obtain a passing score on the Graduate Comprehensive Examination.
