Orientation

FAQs

Do I need to do anything prior to my scheduled Orientation date?

Yes! You will receive additional information about what all we need you to do prior to attending your scheduled Orientation session. Please check your email and Future Tiger portal regularly for instructions and updates regarding Orientation. Also, check your JSU P.A.W.S. account to view your class schedule and Financial Aid award prior to coming to orientation.

Will I be able to connect with other incoming students during Orientation?

During your Orientation session, we will have sessions just for students and their orientation student leaders. You will be able to connect with students from your academic college as well as other incoming students.

What should I bring to Orientation?

It is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes and casual clothes (it is normally hot in Jackson during the summer months!). We also recommend that you bring a raincoat and/or umbrella if the forecast calls for rain. Students and guests should bring money for meals, snacks and shopping in the campus store.

I have mobility issues. Can I still participate in Orientation?

Yes! We will work to provide alternate transportation for those with mobility issues to various locations during Orientation. In order for accommodations to be made, please be sure to contact disability services at 601-979-3704 or email them at adaservices@jsums.edu.  The Orientation team will work with Disability Services to provide assistance during the event.

What is new student orientation?

New Student Orientation (NSO) is a mandatory program for all newly admitted students that will prepare them for their first year of college. During NSO, we will cover topics that will help you prepare for and successfully navigate your first year at Jackson State University. We will register you for your fall courses during the NSO process.

Do I have to complete all the sessions?

Yes. If you miss a session, you will miss something important! It is mandatory that students complete NSO (New Student Orientation) in its entirety. You are here to learn about your first year at JSU and to ensure a smooth transition into the University.

What does the orientation fee cover?

The NSO (New Student Orientation) fee covers all expenses for the orientation program. You will receive meals, a registration swag packet and a JSU T-Shirt. It is required that all students complete the new student orientation program. NSO fees are non-refundable.

Can I just see an advisor on my own and not go to orientation?

No. While you can visit the University Academic Advisement Center once you come to campus, you will be registered for classes after you complete New Student Orientation. Also, remember that orientation provides you with a lot more information than just scheduling classes.

Will I be able to get the classes I need at orientation?

We will do our best to ensure you get the classes you need. We carefully look at each request and work diligently to prepare the best schedule for you. We are always able to make sure the students get the classes they need by working closely with the academic units. Once you begin classes, you will be in regular rotation of advisement and able to meet with your assigned advisor for assistance.
