About the President

Denise Jones Gregory, Ph.D.

President, Jackson State University

Dr. Denise Jones Gregory is the president of Jackson State University and a veteran higher education leader. An accomplished chemist and administrator, she has over two decades of experience fostering student success and academic excellence.

Over the course of her first year serving as JSU president, beginning in her interim role, Dr. Gregory has led numerous transformative initiatives for safety upgrades, campus renovations and groundbreakings, and strategic planning.

In her prior role as JSU's provost and vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Gregory worked to strengthen academic programs, expand student support initiatives, and help secure significant research partnerships.

Before returning to her alma mater, the Mississippi native served as a chemistry professor and associate provost at Samford University in Alabama, where she led efforts to enhance the campus learning environment and launched a high school STEM academy. She began her career as a faculty member at Tuskegee University. Dr. Gregory earned her Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Georgia Tech and a bachelor's degree from Jackson State. Known for her inclusive, collaborative leadership style and her unwavering dedication to service, she is committed to guiding JSU with a focus on excellence and student achievement.

Dr. Gregory and her husband, JSU Sports and SWAC Hall of Famer Shawn Gregory, are life members of the JSU National Alumni Association. They are the parents of two children. Her family's legacy spans generations: her parents, triplet sisters and her eldest nephew are also proud Jackson State graduates.
