Ms. Cresandra Washington defended her doctoral dissertation (title: The Impact of the 1992 Ayers v. Settlement on the Mission and Relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Mississippi) on October 24, 2022.
The $500 million settlement in 2002 has caused significant impacts on public HBCUs in Mississippi. She analyzed the impacts on student enrollment trends, capacity, ethnic composition, and the school budget for the Public HBCUs in Mississippi (Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, and Mississippi Valley State University).
Professor Johnny Gyllenlen served as the committee chair and the dissertation advisor. Professors Jae-Young Ko, Chester Robinson, Ester Stokes, and Dr. Jackie Williams (external member) served as the committee members.
