Week 1 REU opening ceremony for participants and mentors; Development of daily work schedule with mentors and start on respective research projects. Lectures: (1) Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (4 hrs); (2) Laboratory safety (1 hr); (3) Scientific literature (2 hrs). |
Week 2 Workshop on scientific ethics (1 hr); REU participants' presentation on their perspective research projects. |
Week 3 Workshops on career perspectives, graduate school applications/graduate studies, and GRE preparation (4 hrs); Panel discussion with graduate students and faculty members. |
Week 4 Frequent student-faculty meetings; Introduction to techniques necessary to address research problem. |
Week 5-8 Write introduction and methods section of final report paper; Field trip participants; Participants will update on their progress, Discussion of data analysis and interpretation. |
Week 9 Wrap up field work for research; Begin analyses. |
Week 10 REU Research Colloquium; Finalize research reports and other deliverables with faculty mentors; Establishment of a REU participant contact information database. |
