Inaugural High School Battle of the Bands

The Jackson State University "Sonic Boom of the South" will be hosting its inaugural High School Battle of the Bands on October 2, 2021, at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium! This will be THEE premier event for selected eight high school bands. We are now accepting applications to be considered for participation; applications should be submitted by July 15. Please see below for more information.

We only have a limited amount of spots open, so you have to act fast in order to secure your spot.

Band Classification: Bands will perform from smallest class to largest

Small (1-50) 2 bands will be selected

Medium (51-80) 3 bands will be selected

Large (81+) 3 bands will be selected


Band Incentives

Bands can either be judged by highly decorated/respected adjudicators or receive general comments. Those that choose to be judged can win a 1st place trophy for each category (small, medium, large group).

Each band will receive $2 off of every ticket sold specifically by/for their group

Each participating band will receive $1,000 to utilize towards their programs

Each band will receive a sponsored meal after the event

Each band will have an opportunity to play in the stands before or after their field show performance

Students will get an opportunity to perform in front of a capacity crowd and witness a performance by the Sonic Boom in JSU's home stadium

Exposure for the high school programs to assist with high school recruitment and promote the arts in their area

Logistics and Criteria

We are accepting applications from bands all over the country. Submissions are due by July 15, 2021, midnight

Directors will be notified if their band is selected by August 1, 2021 along with detailed information about the event

It is preferred that Band Directors be certain that their band can retrieve proper administrative or district approval and financial support to travel prior to submitting an application

Because of COVID circumventing some bands from performing during the 2020-2021 year, directors may submit a performance from the 2019-2020 school year that they feel is suitable. It is important to realistically assess if the current group will be of the same or greater quality of the video provided

Participating bands will be responsible for their travel, lodging and meals (JSU Bands will not be responsible for those expenses)

Hotels with discounted rates will be identified for visiting bands should they choose to lodge during their stay

Rehearsal space(s) will be provided for those that may need it (prior to the event)
