The State of Mississippi mandates participation in the retirement system as a condition of employment.&nbsp; The employee contributes 7.25 percent and the employer contributes 12.0 percent of the employee&rsquo;s salary up to $230,000.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMembers who joined the Retirement System before July 1, 2007, are vested with four years of membership service and can retire at age 60 with 25 years of creditable service.&nbsp; 770 days\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"width:312px\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t3 years\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPlease contact the Division of Human Resources for additional years to the above conversion table. &nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Employees can retire on disability through the retirement system &ndash; if an employee is disabled before age 60 and has four years of service if member was hired prior to July 1, 2007 or eight years of membership service if hired on or after July 1, 2007 or if an employee has a work-related injury, he\/she may retire without regard to time on the job.&nbsp;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIf an employee terminates before he\/she becomes vested with PERS, the employee has three options:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\tWithdraw his\/her contributions with a 20 percent penalty on early withdrawal\n\t<\/li>\n<li value=\"2\">\n\t\tTransfer the contribution to a qualified retirement account, or\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tLeave the contribution with PERS in anticipation of returning to covered employment.\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.25in\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIf the employee moves to another state agency, the funds <em>must <\/em>remain in PERS.&nbsp;
