{"id":335,"date":"2014-07-15T00:51:26","date_gmt":"2014-07-15T00:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/staffhandbook\/?page_id=335"},"modified":"2014-07-15T00:51:26","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T00:51:26","slug":"3-5-9bereavement-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/staffhandbook\/3-5-9bereavement-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"3.5.9\tBereavement Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\n\t<strong>Overview<\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\n\tDuring times of death in the immediate family, Jackson State University understands that employees may need additional time off for various reasons pertaining to their loss.\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 1.25in\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t<strong>Policy Provisions<\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Up to three (3) days of earned medical leave with full pay may be granted.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">If the period exceeds three days in any one occurrence, the excess will be charged to accrued personal leave or deducted from the employee&rsquo;s salary.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">One day of accrued personal leave with full pay will be granted for relatives or persons outside of the immediate family.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Any additional time off is permissible but requires approval based on workloads and staffing requirements.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 1.25in\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t<strong>Immediate Family Members<\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Immediate family members under this policy are defined as:<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Parents or legal guardians (includes spouse)<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Brother<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Sister<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Child\/Step-child<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Spouse<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Significant other(s)<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Employee&rsquo;s paternal and maternal grandparents (includes spouse)<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Grandchildren<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Step-parents (includes spouse)<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Aunt<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Uncle<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 1.25in\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t<strong>Employee Responsibility<\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Employees who need bereavement time should notify their supervisors as soon as possible.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Employees may be required to provide evidence of the immediate family member&rsquo;s death, such as a copy of the death certificate or a copy of the newspaper obituary.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Employees who require additional time beyond that provided in this policy should discuss the situation with their supervisors. Options include using vacation time or an unpaid personal leave.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 0.5in\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t<strong>Management Responsibility<\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Managers should notify Human Resources when one of their employees requests bereavement days.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Deaths of immediate family members can be extremely difficult.&nbsp; Supervisors should be sensitive to the need for additional time off in some cases.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Bereavement leave requests for employees not covered in this procedure may be granted at the discretion of the department head.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Department heads are responsible for ensuring that bereavement leave is documented on the appropriate corporate form for attendance reporting or time card\/sheet.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 0.5in\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t<strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Entitlement<\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Upon notification of death, the Office of the President will in most cases, notify the University family of the employee&rsquo;s and\/or immediate family member&rsquo;s death.&nbsp; No notification will be issued when the affected employee requests that no notification be issued.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">In the event of an employee&rsquo;s death, communication will be sent from the President.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">The Division of Human Resources will send a card of condolence from the University.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em\">Other expressions of bereavement are encouraged but may only be funded through private expenditures or donations.<\/span>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview During times of death in the immediate family, Jackson State University understands that employees may need additional time off for various reasons pertaining to their loss. &nbsp; Policy Provisions Up to three (3) days of earned medical leave with full pay may be granted.
