{"id":2597,"date":"2014-08-01T20:56:56","date_gmt":"2014-08-01T20:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/studentlife\/?page_id=2597"},"modified":"2023-08-23T14:49:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T19:49:57","slug":"service-hours-needed-for-graduation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.jsums.edu\/studentlife\/center-for-service-community-engaged-learning\/service-hours-needed-for-graduation\/","title":{"rendered":"Service Hours Needed for Graduation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Alice Varnado Harden Center for Service and Community Engaged Learning promotes all students toward improving the human condition through civic engagement.\u00a0 Beginning with the Class of 2014, every student graduating from Jackson State University must have 120 verifiable service hours to graduate (60 hours for transfer students).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Please be advised of the following:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Only students who have enrolled in Jackson State University\u00a0 beginning in fall 2010 to present are required to complete the service requirement for graduation; students enrolled prior to fall \u00a02010 are <b><u>NOT<\/u><\/b><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>required to complete the service requirement.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If a student transfers at least one (1) academic credit from an accredited university\/college, than he\/she is considered to be a transfer student.\u00a0 Therefore, students accepted to JSU with transfer credit hours are only required to complete 60 hours of service in order to graduate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Field hours\/practicum\/unpaid internship\/field experience and the like, must be submitted on official letterhead, from the Department Chair, to the Alice Varnado Harden Center for Service and Community Engaged Learning in order to document the completed service hours on the student transcript.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Any service hours notated as &#8220;In-progress&#8221; on a student&#8217;s transcript must be manually added to the total cumulative service hours.\u00a0 This step is required because hours will change quite frequently in the current semester.\u00a0 The final hours for the current\u00a0 semester will roll over to the student&#8217;s official transcript at the end of the semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Undergraduate students cleared for Fall 2014 Commencement may have any combination of the following:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.5in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 120 hours of on-campus community service ; OR<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 120 hours of off-campus community service ; OR<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 120 hours of service learning (offered through an academic course); OR<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 120 hours of unpaid internship; OR<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 120 hours of field experience;\u00a0 OR<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.5in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 120 hours which are completed through a combination of on-campus\/off-campus \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0community service\/service-learning\/internships and\/or field experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.5in;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Students are encouraged to complete community service hours over Spring Break, Fall Break, Winter Break, and\/or the summer however, approval of the service site is required by the Alice Varnado Harden Center for Service and Community Engaged Learning before completing any service hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;
