military students must know and adhere to in receiving benefits.\u00a0 These policies and procedures will keep you on track throughout your matriculation here at Jackson State University.\u00a0 It is important for you to be in contact with the Veterans Center for each semester in which you want to receive benefits.<br \/>\nPrior to the beginning of each semester, you need to provide a copy of your class schedule to the Veterans and Military Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Benefits Eligibility:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 All service members must have served honorably.\u00a0The VA has the ultimate authority in determining your eligibility for VA Educational benefits.\u00a0 If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact a VA counselor at 1-888-442-4551.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Chapter 30:<\/u>\u00a0<\/strong>Montgomery GI Bill\u00ae Active Duty:\u00a0 Member must have entered active duty for the 1st time on or after July 1, 1985 and had military pay reduced by $100 a month for the first year of service.\u00a0 Member is entitled to receive up to 36 months of education benefits payable for 10 years following release from active duty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Chapter 31<\/u>: <\/strong>Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&amp;E):\u00a0 Member must have served on or after September 16, 1940 and have a service connected disability rated at least 20% by the VA and need vocational rehabilitation to overcome an employment limitation.\u00a0 For additional information contact your local VA Regional Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Chapter 33:<\/u>\u00a0<\/strong>Post 9\/11 GI Bill\u00ae:\u00a0 Provides financial support for education and housing to members with at least 90 days of aggregated service after September 10, 2001 or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.\u00a0 Eligibility percentage is based on the service members length of aggregate active duty service after September 10, 2001.\u00a0 Member may be entitled to the cost of tuition, fees and monthly housing allowance.\u00a0 Veterans are\u00a0\u00a0required to submit Certificate of Eligibility and\u00a0 Military (Joint Services) Transcript to the JSU Veterans &amp; Military Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Chapter 35:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 Dependents Educational Assistance:\u00a0 Must be a dependent or survivor of an eligible veteran who died or is permanently and totally disable as a result of a service-connected disability.\u00a0 The age requirement for this benefit is between 18-26 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Chapter 1606:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 Members who are actively participating in the Selected Reserve components to include the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Reserves.\u00a0 They must have a six year obligation to serve and is entitled up to 36 months of benefits. Service members are required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility,\u00a0 Notice Of Basic Eligibility (NOBE), Kicker Contract or Orders, and Military (Joint Services) Transcripts to the Veterans &amp; Military Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Fry Scholarship:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 This scholarship is available to children of service members who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Kickers &amp; Buy-Ups:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 These are additional amounts of benefits that are part of the original enlistment contract or part of a re-enlistment contract.\u00a0 Contact your military unit for more details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Credit for Educational Experience in the\u00a0Armed Forces:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Jackson State University utilizes the American Council on Education\u2019s \u201cGuide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services\u201d for the evaluation of training for military occupational skills.\u00a0 Final acceptance of such military transfer credit is left to the discretion of the major department chair and the dean of the college in which the student is enrolled.\u00a0\u00a0 The first step to claiming the credits you have earned is to request a transcript from your military service.\u00a0 Each service branch will provide unofficial personal copies and send schools an official copy of your transcript at no charge.\u00a0 Each service branch has their own system for recording your military education and experience credits.\u00a0 The Army uses the AART system. The Navy and Marine Corps use the SMART system.\u00a0 The Air Force automatically captures your training, experience and standardized test scores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>CHANGES TO YOUR ENROLLMENT STATUS:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nYou must contact the Veterans and Military Center <strong><u>immediately<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0if you make changes to your class schedule.\u00a0 The Center will help you determine if and how the change will impact your benefits for each semester.\u00a0 If you change your schedule you need to bring a revised class schedule that has been signed by our advisor.\u00a0 Failure to do this may result in a reduction in your benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Verify your Enrollment:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nChapter 30 and 1606 recipients are required to contact the VA on the last day of each month to verify enrollment. If you forget to call, your payment will be held until you call the VA. When you are verifying your enrollment, if the number of credits or enrollment status is incorrect, contact the Veterans Center with the correct information.\u00a0 Do not try to correct it through the VA website.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0To verify by phone:\u00a0 1-877-823-2378<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0To verify online: W.A.V.E system<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gibill.va.gov\/wave\/index.do\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> https:\/\/www.gibill.va.gov\/wave\/index.do<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Dropping Classes or Withdrawing:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you drop a course or need to withdraw from school after the drop period contact the Veterans Center as soon as possible.\u00a0 The VA may reduce your benefits retroactively to the beginning of the semester unless there are mitigating circumstances.\u00a0 Mitigating circumstances are circumstances beyond your control that prevent you from continuing in school or that cause you to reduce the number of credits you are enrolled in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Examples of mitigating circumstances include:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0An illness or injury afflicting you during the enrollment period<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0An illness or death in your immediate family<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0An unavoidable change in your conditions of employment<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Unanticipated active duty service, including training<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Immediate family or financial obligations beyond your control that require you to suspend pursuit of your education to gain employment<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Medical and Hardship Withdrawals:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you need to withdraw completely and complete a Medical or Hardship Withdrawal contact the Health Center, Registrar\u2019s Office and the Division of Student Life.\u00a0 Please inform the Veterans Center to avoid any\u00a0 VA debt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><u><strong>Military Withdrawal or Called to Active Duty:<\/strong><\/u><br \/>\nIf you are called to active duty and need to withdraw while receiving benefits, there are a few offices on campus that you should notify.\u00a0 This will ensure that you do not pay tuition and fees unnecessarily and that you can easily return to school at a later date.\u00a0 Bring a copy of your orders to the Veterans and Military\u00a0Center so they can be forwarded to the VA.\u00a0 If you have already deployed, you can fax your orders to the Veterans and Military\u00a0Center.\u00a0 Also contact your academic department, financial aid, housing (if you are living on campus), the registrar&#8217;s and the Division of Student Life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Repeated Courses:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nCourses that are failed or for which the grade does not meet minimum requirements for graduation may be certified for VA purpose if they are repeated.\u00a0 If you repeat a course, you need to have a repeat form signed by your departmental or undergraduate advisor.\u00a0\u00a0 If the advisor will not sign the repeat form, the VA will not pay for course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Satisfactory Progress:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are pursuing a bachelor\u2019s degree, you are expected to make satisfactory progress toward attaining the degree.\u00a0 In addition you are expected to enter a major and graduate after completion of a reasonable number of credits.\u00a0 Academic failure will directly affect your benefits and will cause serious consequences such as a reduction or loss of benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Transfer Students:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are a veteran\/military transfer student you will need to fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vba.va.gov\/pubs\/forms\/VBA-22-1995-ARE.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">VA 22-1995<\/span><\/a> \u201cChange of Program\/Training Form\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Dependent transfer students will need to fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vba.va.gov\/pubs\/forms\/VBA-22-5495-ARE.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">VA 22-5495<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<\/span> \u201cChange of Program\/Training Form\u201d for eligible dependents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong><u>Non-Matriculated Students:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are a non-matriculated (not yet degree-seeking), you will need to see your advisor for a non-matriculation form.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Please note: All service members must provide their official Military orders to the Veteran &amp; Military Student Support Center\u00a0 (jsuveterans@jsums.edu) and all of your professors.
