MPH – Behavioral Health Promotion and Education
College of Health Sciences

The mission of the Public Health Program at Jackson State University is to provide quality education and leadership in community-based research and practice. Through collaborative efforts with communities, the Program promotes health and seeks to prevent disease and disability, with special emphasis on the underserved and at-risk populations of Mississippi, the nation, and the world.

MPH – Behavioral Health Promotion and Education

The Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree Program prepares students at Jackson State University to become competent practitioners in different areas of public health including behavioral health promotion and education, epidemiology, and health policy and management.  Individuals with the MPH degree can be expected to compete effectively in the job market and respond to the challenges posed by disparities in health and healthcare affecting minorities and other historically underserved populations.  The Program provides students with a master’s experience that is multidisciplinary, problem-centered, fully engaged, and integrative of the diverse elements needed in the education of the public health practitioner.

Our MPH program at Jackson State University serves both full-time and part-time student.  Full-time students can usually complete the curriculum in two and one-half years.  Part-time usually requires two additional semesters.  Students acquire the necessary professional knowledge, skills and competencies to be qualified for employment in public health and medical care practice in their specialized disciplines.

We offer a Master of Public Health degree in Behavioral and Environmental Health with the following concentration:

Students are required to complete a minimum of 45 semester hours of credit including successful completion of a field practice internship to receive their Master of Public Health degree.  The MPH curriculum requires 6 core courses or 18 credit hours (3 hours per course) for all students.  Each concentration offers 5 required specialization courses or 15 credit hours in the advanced study of public health specialization.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

By including people, communities, and systems in our research, teaching, and practice, the Department of Behavioral and Environmental Health Sciences aims to promote and improve health as well as equity.
We train students to use theories, concepts, and methodologies from many social and behavioral scientific fields to design, carry out, and assess health promotion and illness prevention initiatives.

LEARN BY DOING

Behavioral and social variables influence all diseases. We believe that in order to improve health outcomes and promote health, it is important to comprehend how these diseases relate to the person, family, society as a whole, organizations, communities, and public policy. This system, which is dynamic, influences issues like care access and adherence. As a result, the behavioral and community health sciences within public health evaluate the health requirements of populations and communities, design interventions to prevent disease and increase adherence based on social/behavioral theory, and use research methods to evaluate these programs and recommend improvement, frequently within community-based settings.
