Detailed instructions regarding the move-in sign-up process will be sent to students through their JSU email account. Students should monitor their email regularly for important updates, deadlines, and additional move-in instructions.

Move-in times may vary based on residence hall assignments, traffic flow plans, and available staffing. We strongly encourage students and families not to make specific travel arrangements until a housing assignment has been confirmed and a move-in appointment has been selected.

Early Move-In Opportunities

Certain University-sponsored programs and approved groups may be eligible for early move-in prior to the official Fall 2026 move-in dates.

Students participating in approved early arrival programs must coordinate directly with their program or organization. Approved groups will submit participant rosters to Housing & Residence Life to assist with planning and move-in preparation.

Students participating in one of these programs should complete any required registration steps by the announced deadline to ensure they are eligible to select an early move-in time.

Important: Participation in a campus organization or activity does not automatically guarantee early move-in approval. Only programs approved by Jackson State University Housing & Residence Life will be permitted to participate in early arrival.

First-Time Freshmen & New Students

Saturday, August 1, 2026
Residence halls open at 9:00 a.m.

New students will participate in a coordinated move-in experience designed to provide assistance, direction, and support as they transition to campus life.

Returning & Readmitted Students

Friday, August 7, 2026
Residence halls open at 9:00 a.m.

Returning students should arrive during their assigned move-in time to ensure an efficient check-in process.

Residence Hall Move-In Schedule

Move-in dates and times are organized by residence hall to help manage traffic, parking, unloading areas, and staff assistance.

Students should only arrive during their assigned move-in appointment.

Unassisted Move-In

Students who choose to move in outside of the scheduled coordinated move-in periods may do so during approved unassisted move-in dates.

Please understand that during unassisted move-in:

• Housing & Residence Life staff assistance will be limited.
• Traffic routes and unloading procedures may not be coordinated.
• Students and families are responsible for following all campus parking and safety regulations.

Important Move-In Reminders

Before arriving on campus, students must:

✅ Have a confirmed housing assignment.
✅ Complete all required Housing Agreement documents.
✅ Resolve any outstanding University holds.
✅ Complete financial requirements or payment arrangements.
✅ Submit required health/immunization documentation.
✅ Select a move-in appointment.

Students who have not completed all required University and Housing requirements may not be permitted to check in or receive room keys.

Packing for college is an exciting part of beginning your JSU experience! A little preparation and planning can make your transition to campus easier and help ensure you arrive ready for a successful semester.

Before packing, review the items below carefully. Bringing the right items will help you create a comfortable and welcoming space while ensuring compliance with Jackson State University Housing & Residence Life policies.

Tips

• Pack smart and avoid bringing more than you need. You can always purchase additional items after arriving on campus.
• Contact your roommate(s) before move-in to coordinate shared items and avoid bringing duplicates.
• Wait until you arrive on campus before purchasing large amounts of groceries, supplies, or room essentials.
• Label all belongings with your name, residence hall, room number, and phone number.
• Keep important documents, medications, valuables, and personal identification with you during move-in.
• To save space, consider leaving seasonal clothing at home and switching items during visits home throughout the year.
• Bring a hand cart, wagon, or dolly if available to make unloading easier.

What to Bring

Personal Items

• Appropriate clothing for all seasons, including items that can be layered as temperatures change.
• Rain gear (jacket, umbrella, rain boots).
• Comfortable shoes and athletic wear.
• Academic supplies (backpack, notebooks, pens, folders, etc.).
• Alarm clock.
• Computer, laptop, or tablet with charging cords.
• Photo identification (government-issued ID or JSU ID).
• Insurance information (health and renters insurance, if applicable).

Bedding & Room Essentials

• Twin XL bedding (sheets, blankets, comforter, and pillows) (verify mattress size for your assigned residence hall).
• Clothes hangers.
• Laundry basket or laundry bag.
• Laundry detergent and supplies.
• Trash can and trash bags.
• Cleaning supplies (disinfecting wipes, paper towels, multipurpose cleaner).
• Fan for air circulation and additional comfort.
• Desk lamp with LED or CFL bulbs.

Bathroom & Personal Care Items

• Towels and washcloths.
• Toiletries and personal care items.
• Bathrobe.
• Shower shoes/flip-flops.
• Shower caddy.
• Basic first aid supplies (bandages, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers, etc.).

Kitchen & Convenience Items

• Dish soap and towels.
• Pitcher-style water filter (no faucet attachments).
• Power strip with surge protection (3-prong only).
• Approved small appliances with automatic shut-off features, such as:
  • Keurigs
  • Coffee makers with automatic shut-off

Items to Share With Roommates

Before purchasing shared items, communicate with your roommate(s) to determine what is needed.

Suggested shared items may include:

• Television for shared space.
• Small vacuum and/or broom.
• Cleaning supplies.
• Additional room organization items.
• Shared kitchen supplies (if applicable).

Technology & Wi-Fi Information

Jackson State University provides wireless internet access throughout the residence halls.

For the best connection experience:

• Use updated devices that support current wireless technology.
• Devices with newer Wi-Fi capabilities generally provide better performance.
• Older devices may experience slower speeds or connection issues.

Students should avoid bringing unauthorized networking equipment, including personal wireless routers or Wi-Fi extenders, as these devices can interfere with campus network operations.

What Not to Bring

To maintain a safe living environment for all residents, the following items are prohibited in University Housing:

Prohibited Items Include:

• Trailers or moving trucks (unless specifically approved).
• Personal mattresses.
• Alcohol or alcohol containers.
• Candles, incense, or items with open flames.
• Pets (except approved service animals or approved fish).
• Space heaters.
• LED strip lights or similar lighting products.
• Weapons, firearms, fireworks, explosives, or dangerous materials.
• Tobacco products, vapes, and e-cigarettes.
• Illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.
• Wi-Fi extenders or personal wireless routers.
• 3D printers.
• Installed plumbing items, including but not limited to:
  • Bidet attachments
  • Faucet filter attachments
  • Toilet seats/lids
  • Shower heads
• Appliances with open heating elements or where food comes into direct contact with the heating source, including:
  • Air fryers
  • Toasters
  • Toaster ovens
  • Pressure cookers
  • Hot plates
  • Griddles
  • Grills

Prohibited Electric Transportation Devices

For the safety of all residential students, the following battery-powered transportation devices are prohibited inside all residence halls:

• Electric scooters
• Electric bicycles (e-bikes)
• Hoverboards
• Electric skateboards
• Electric longboards
• One-wheel devices
• Electric unicycles
• Self-balancing personal transportation devices
• Any other battery-powered personal transportation device utilizing lithium-ion or lithium-metal batteries

Students may not store, charge, or operate these devices inside any Jackson State University residence hall.

Housing & Residence Life will strictly enforce this policy. Any prohibited items discovered in University Housing are subject to immediate confiscation and may result in additional disciplinary action in accordance with University policies.

Shipping & Package Pickup

Students may not ship approved items to campus before move-in.

Welcome Home, Tigers! Move-In Day is an exciting milestone, and Jackson State University Housing & Residence Life is committed to providing a safe, organized, and efficient experience for all students and families.

To ensure a smooth check-in process, please review the following important information before arriving:

• Only the assigned resident may complete the official residence hall check-in process. Parents, guardians, family members, or guests may not check in on behalf of a student or receive room keys in the student’s absence.
• Students must arrive during their assigned move-in date and time.
• Trailers and moving trucks are not permitted in residence hall unloading areas.
• Moving vans or larger vehicles may be permitted only if they fit safely within designated parking spaces and do not interfere with move-in operations.
• Students and families must follow all Housing & Residence Life staff directions, traffic patterns, and parking instructions.

What to Expect on Move-In Day

1. Receive Move-In Parking/Unloading Instructions

Upon arrival, students and families will receive instructions from Housing & Residence Life staff regarding unloading procedures and designated areas.

To help maintain an organized move-in process:

• Students may have a limited number of vehicles permitted during move-in.
• Vehicles must display any required move-in credentials or permits provided by Housing & Residence Life.
• Only approved vehicles may access designated unloading areas.

2. Unload Belongings at the Designated Loading Area

Once directed to the unloading area:

• Students and families should unload belongings efficiently to allow other residents access.
• Housing & Residence Life staff and volunteers may assist with moving approved belongings to residence hall rooms as available.
• Students should label all belongings with:
  • Student name
  • Residence hall
  • Room number
  • Phone number

For added security, students should keep valuable items, medications, important documents, and personal items with them at all times.

Students are not required to have Housing staff or volunteers handle every item. If there are belongings you prefer to move yourself, please inform staff upon arrival.

3. Complete Check-In and Receive Your Room Key

While belongings are being unloaded, the resident must complete the check-in process.

Students must have:

• Valid JSU identification card or approved photo identification.
• Completed all required Housing and University requirements.
• Cleared any outstanding holds preventing check-in.

Only the assigned resident may complete check-in and receive room access.

4. Park Your Vehicle

After unloading is complete, vehicles must be moved to designated parking areas.

Please remember:

• Do not leave vehicles unattended in unloading zones.
• Do not park in reserved spaces, handicap spaces without proper authorization, fire lanes, non-parking areas, or unauthorized locations.
• Vehicles found in violation of University parking regulations may be ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s expense.

Students and families should follow all parking instructions provided by University staff.

5. Head to Your Room and Begin Settling In

Once check-in is complete, students may proceed to their assigned room and begin unpacking.

This is the beginning of your JSU residential experience—take time to meet your roommate, connect with your community, and make your new space feel like home!

Helpful Move-In Reminders

• Pack belongings in easy-to-carry containers such as suitcases, storage bins, and moving boxes.
• Bring a hand cart, wagon, or dolly if available.
• Housing & Residence Life carts are available for move-in assistance but must be returned after use.
• Staff members and volunteers assist with transporting belongings but do not unpack, organize rooms, or arrange furniture.
• Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.
• Mississippi summer temperatures can be hot—stay hydrated and take breaks as needed.
• Keep valuables, medications, and important documents with you.
• Be patient and courteous—move-in is a team effort, and we appreciate your cooperation.
