JSU Commencement Frequently Asked Questions

How important is it for me to check my JSU email for information about commencement?

It is very important to check your JSU email all the time but especially in the months leading up to commencement.  Academic Affairs and the Office of Registrar and Records will send important messages through email.  Be sure to check the daily emails sent from JSU Public Relations too.

What do I do if I cannot make it to practice?

Commencement rehearsal is highly encouraged but not mandatory. Students who cannot attend rehearsal will still have a great commencement experience. The commencement marshals and volunteers will be in place to guide graduating students at the ceremony.

If I am a graduate student, who do I contact for my honor cord?

Honor cords are only for undergraduate students.

Is the hooding ceremony for graduate students?

The hooding ceremony is for doctoral students only.

Will the hooding ceremony be live streamed?

The hood ceremony will be live streamed. Be sure to check at the Jackson State University’s Facebook at the time of the event. The recording of the event will be available for later viewing too

How do new faculty get regalia for the ceremony?

For regalia, please visit the JSU Campus Store.
Regalia orders need to be placed in advance of the ceremony.

How will I know if I was approved to participate in Commencement?

To determine if your name is on the commencement list, you send an email to degreeinfo@jsums.edu.

Are we receiving tickets for commencement?

Tickets will not be needed for commencement.

How many of my family members and friends can attend commencement?

There is no limit on the number of guests that graduates can bring. We recommend that guests arrive early. When the maximum capacity is reached at ceremonies at the AAC, the doors will close, and additional guests will not be permitted to enter. In this case, there will be an overflow space at the Rose M. McCoy auditorium.

Does the ceremony start on time?

Yes, the ceremony will start on time. Be early. Don’t be late.

Can I decorate my graduation cap?

Graduates can decorate their caps.  Be creative and have fun with it.
