At Detachment 006, we challenge you to grow into a well-rounded student-leader through every facet of our program. Your physical strength and endurance will be tested through our physical fitness training. Your judgment and critical thinking will be sharpened through Leadership Laboratory opportunities.
Leadership potential will be showcased and developed through Group Leadership Projects and a variety of team-based challenges. You’ll also be pushed to master key concepts in teamwork, communication, and leadership fundamentals.
At Det 006, we don’t just build capability — we push you beyond your limits to help you realize your full potential.
“Challenging Minds, Changing Lives.”
At the conclusion of your AFROTC journey, you’ll graduate with a guaranteed career placement in one of the Air Force or Space Force’s many career fields—starting at a base pay of approximately $48,000, with the potential to increase to around $60,000 within four years (not including allowances for housing and subsistence).
You’ll also receive full medical and dental coverage, dependent pay if you have a spouse and/or children, and access to the Post 9-11 GI Bill, which can be used for future education or transferred to dependents if you opt in. Additionally, you’ll enjoy 30 days of paid vacation each year and become part of a professional network filled with exceptional leaders and forward-thinking individuals.
And perhaps best of all—you’ll get all of this while still enjoying the full college experience. You can participate in student organizations, athletics, and pursue your personal interests and hobbies just like any other student.
There is no military commitment until you accept a scholarship or enter the Professional Officer Course, so you’re welcome to try the program for a semester—completely commitment-free—and see if AFROTC is the right fit for you.
Our qualification standards are straightforward. First, you must demonstrate a strong work ethic and be accepted or enrolled as a full-time student at Jackson State University—our host institution—or one of our Crosstown Schools: Millsaps College, Tougaloo College, Mississippi College, Belhaven University, or Hinds Community College. If you’re still in high school, you should plan to enroll full-time upon graduation.
Second, you must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
Finally, you must exhibit good moral character, as you are training to become a leader in the world’s greatest Air Force.
