“Chain Breakers” Mural
Local artist Sabrina Howard’s mural, “Chain Breakers,” is a prominent, eye-catching feature on the side of the COFO building. Now surrounded by the COFO Pocket Park, the work features figures who played important roles in the civil rights movement and surrounding community.
From left to right, the mural depicts:
- Alyce G. Clarke, a representative and the first Black woman to serve as a state legislator in Mississippi
- Fannie Lou Hamer, activist, co-founder and vice chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party
- Bob Moses, activist, SNCC field secretary, and COFO Program Director
- Rose Elizabeth Howard Robinson, Lanier High School Teacher
- Louise Marshall, first Black bookstore owner in the Washington Addition Neighborhood community
- Albert Powell, first Black florist in the Washington Addition Neighborhood community
