Digital Accessibility at Jackson State University

Our Commitment to Digital Access

Jackson State University is committed to ensuring that our digital spaces are accessible to all users, including individuals with disabilities. We believe everyone should be able to access information, services, and resources offered through our websites, applications, and digital content.

As part of this commitment, Jackson State University is actively working toward compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, the recognized international standard for digital accessibility and the technical standard adopted under the Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

What Digital Accessibility Means

Digital accessibility ensures that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with digital content effectively. This includes accessibility for individuals who use:

  • Screen readers or other assistive technologies

  • Keyboard-only navigation

  • Captions or transcripts for multimedia

  • Alternative text for images

  • Accessible document formats

Our goal is to reduce barriers and improve access to our digital services for all members of the Jackson State University community.

Our Approach to Digital Accessibility Compliance

Jackson State University uses a continuous improvement approach to digital accessibility. Given the size and complexity of our digital environment, accessibility work is prioritized and addressed over time.

Our efforts include:

  • Evaluating websites, applications, documents, and multimedia for accessibility

  • Remediating accessibility issues based on risk and impact

  • Integrating accessibility into new content and system development

  • Using a combination of automated tools and manual testing to verify accessibility

  • Providing alternative access or accommodations when barriers are identified

Accessibility Standards We Follow

Jackson State University is working toward conformance with:

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA

These guidelines address a wide range of accessibility needs, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and neurological disabilities.

What We Are Actively Working On

Our digital accessibility efforts focus on areas that directly affect access to university programs and services, including:

  • Admissions and enrollment information

  • Academic advising and student services

  • Financial aid and registration systems

  • Online forms and applications

  • Public-facing web content

  • Digital documents such as PDFs and Word files

  • Videos and other multimedia content

Accessibility improvements are ongoing, and updates are made as issues are identified and addressed.

Accessibility for New Content

Jackson State University strives to ensure that new and updated digital content is accessible by default. This includes applying accessibility best practices during content creation, design, and development.

When content cannot be made fully accessible immediately, we work to provide accessible alternatives and plan for remediation as resources allow.

Third-Party Tools and Content

Some digital services used by the university are provided by third-party vendors. Jackson State University considers accessibility when selecting and implementing third-party tools and continues to work with vendors to address accessibility concerns as they are identified.
