Tameka Hyland, EdD
Dr. Tameka D. Hyland is an accomplished educator, higher education faculty member, and visionary leader with more than two decades of experience in K-12 and higher education. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Educational Administration, Foundations, and Research at Jackson State University, where she prepares the next generation of school leaders through research-driven teaching and mentorship.
Her career has been marked by transformational leadership in diverse educational settings. As Principal of Vicksburg High School, she achieved historic milestones, including moving the school to a “B” letter grade for the first time in its history, raising the graduation rate to a record 91.3%, and significantly increasing dual enrollment participation, resulting in students earning thousands of college credit hours and saving nearly $2 million in tuition costs. Prior to this role, she successfully led Sherman Avenue Elementary, moving it from a “D” to a “C” rating and achieving the second highest Kindergarten Readiness scores in Mississippi.
Beyond school leadership, Dr. Hyland has served as Principal of Cares School (Canopy Children’s Solutions), where she advanced specialized education services, Section 504
supports, and individualized learning programs for K-12 students. She also contributes statewide as a Professional Growth System Trainer and a member of the Mississippi Department of Education Accountability Task Force, shaping policy and practice to strengthen school accountability and educator effectiveness.
In addition to her administrative leadership, Dr. Hyland is the CEO and Founder of the Teacher Leadership Academy, LLC, providing consulting, coaching, workforce development
training, and instructional support services to schools and organizations. She is a proven grant writer, workforce development advocate, and sought-after speaker, having presented at national and state conferences including AASA, MASA, and the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Conference. She is also a published author of The Reality of Teaching, U-Turn: A Recipe for School Reform, and Granny’s Pearls of Wisdom.
Her dedication and excellence have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School of Excellence Award (2023), the Alcorn State University
Outstanding Administrator Award, and official commendations from Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. and Congressman Bennie Thompson.
A lifelong advocate for equity, excellence, and empowerment in education, Dr. Hyland continues to build bridges between K-12 and higher education while shaping future leaders who will transform schools, communities, and workforce systems.
