Dr. Alma Thornton is a Professor in the Executive PhD Program. She earned the B.A. degree in Sociology from University of Louisiana at Monroe, the M.S. degree in Social Sciences from Southern University and A & M College, and the Ph.D. degree in Sociology from Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge. Her career experiences include Professor of Sociology at West Virginia State University, Research Associate at Louisiana State University, and Professor of Sociology at Southern University and A&M College, where she is a retired Emeritus Professor. Her teaching and research interests include marriage and family relations, social inequality and race relations, and food insecurity.  She served as Chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Director of the Center for Social Research at Southern University and A&M College, and Guest Editor of the Journal of Race, Gender and Class.  She has extensive experience in program development in areas of HIV/AIDS, substance abuse prevention, housing development, and workforce development.  She has traveled extensive in Africa, Europe, South America, and North America. She has written numerous articles that have been published in scientific research journals. A puzzle enthusiast, her hobbies also include reading, writing, and traveling.
