The School of Lifelong Learning (SLL) meets the needs of present day workers and adult learners, 25 years of age and older, across the state, region, and nation.
 

Prospective Students

The School of Lifelong Learning at Jackson State expands access to higher education for adult learners and nontraditional students, offering flexible pathways for academic advancement, career development, and professional training. Our mission is to empower individuals to complete undergraduate degrees, prepare for graduate school, and develop leadership and workforce skills that support lifelong success.

The School includes three specialized units:

  • Academic Unit – Offers undergraduate degrees in Professional Interdisciplinary Studies and University Studies, designed for working adults seeking degree completion.
  • Center for Professional Development – Provides career training, certification programs, and personal development courses to help professionals upskill and advance.
  • Continuing Education Learning Center – Administers GED and High School Equivalency Testing, enabling adults to pursue further education or new career opportunities.

Student Advising & Support Services 

The faculty and staff advisors in the School of Lifelong Learning are committed to helping all students make informed academic and career development decisions.  Our advisors are prepared to share appropriate, accurate, and timely information at every stage of your academic career.  Each student admitted is assigned a departmental faculty advisor who is responsible for supporting student success by: 

  1. Assisting you in selecting your interdisciplinary program of study.
  2. Helping you get connected to campus resources.
  3. Coaching you through the graduate school application process.
  4. Mentoring you through the job application (or career transition) process.

Student Success

he Student Support Services staff also promotes student success through a series of regular virtual webinars designed to keep students engaged and informed.  Topics covered in these webinars include:

What To Expect

General Requirements

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

In addition to the General Education Core and Electives (including the 9-course Pathway based on the student’s selected track), students must complete: 

  • 17 credit hours of required major core courses (e.g., Interdisciplinary Studies, Workplace Communication, Principle-Centered Leadership, and research methodologies) designed to prepare you for leadership roles in any field;
  • 24 hours of Interdisciplinary Concentration, which includes courses taken in two strategically chosen disciplines related to your career; and
  • 27 hours of Professional Concentration in either General Studies or Human Resource Development, tailored to prepare you for the career of your choice. 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 124 semester hours of credit.
  • Successful completion of all courses in the prescribed program of study.
  • A minimum 2.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Completion of the last 30 hours at Jackson State University.
  • Submission of an application for degree by the published deadline through the university’s online student portal.
