Prospective Students
College of Science, Engineering, and Technology

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to teaching and research. Our mission is to provide an exciting place for our undergraduate and graduate students to learn and do research in mathematical sciences. The department prepares students for a wide range of career paths, ranging from academia, the insurance industry, engineering, climatology, medicine, law and business. Our students are capable of assuming leadership roles in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-based, multicultural society.

Prospective Students

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences at Jackson State University where success in any academic or professional program begins. The Department offers programs leading to the following degrees: 1) BS in Mathematics, 2) BSED in Secondary Mathematics Teaching (Mathematics Education), 3) BS in Statistics, 4) MS in Mathematics, 5) MS in Computational Data Enabled Science and Engineering (CDSE), and 5) PhD in Computational Data Enabled Science and Engineering with a concentration in Computational Mathematics and Statistical Sciences (and other domain areas). The department also offers a minor in mathematics and a minor in statistics at the undergraduate level. The department currently has 12 faculty members, including 8 graduate faculty and approximately 15 adjunct faculty, approximately 43 undergraduate majors, and about 35 full- or part-time graduate students.

Our faculty is very active in research and takes undergraduate teaching seriously with commitment to student learning. Almost every class at the level of Calculus I and above is taught by a full-time faculty member. Our faculty is highly qualified, caring, and dedicated to all students and will train you to become the best mathematician or statistician you can be.

When you first enter any of our undergraduate degree programs, the University Academic Advisers in conjunction with the departmental Undergraduate Coordinator will initially advise you and will continue to advise you with personalized attention until you graduate. You will be assigned to one of our regular faculty members as your personal adviser in the second semester of entering the department programs. It is the responsibility of the adviser, the undergraduate coordinator and the university academic advisers to help you plan your program throughout your career at Jackson State University. Your advisor can also assist you with your plans after graduation. If you wish to change advisors at any time in your career, you merely need to notify the Undergraduate Coordinator.

Detail descriptions of the undergraduate programs and courses can be obtained by linking to the University Catalog website. You can also access this information by linking to the academic section as you perused through this website.

Quality of Learning

We offer programs leading to bachelor’s degrees in mathematics, statistics, secondary mathematics teaching. We also offer graduate programs leading to master’s degrees in mathematics, the teaching of mathematics and a doctorate with concentration in computational mathematics and statistical sciences and award scholarships and provide financial support to our top students. We are in the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology and our students work with faculty and students from many other departments. We have a highly qualified, caring, and dedicated faculty, who will train you to become the best mathematician or statistician you can be. The doctoral degree program with a concentration in computational mathematics and statistical sciences is through the College of Science, Engineering and Technology’s Ph.D. program in Computational Data-Enabled Sciences and Engineering (CDS&E).

Quality of Service

As a mathematician or statistician you can have careers in medical and pharmaceutical companies, high tech industries, and Wall Street Market trading and the doctorate prepares you for careers outside as well as within the academic setting.

Mathematics and statistics are both challenging and interesting fields that almost all academic and professional fields depend on. To succeed, you will have to work hard and study diligently. We know you can do it and we are ready to help you. We urge you to come to Jackson State University and choose a major in the Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences.

What To Expect

General Requirements

Undergraduate Programs

The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences offers the Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics (BS), with concentrations in various areas of Pure and Applied Mathematics, the Bachelor of Science in Education Degree in Mathematics Education (BSED) with an option for the Mississippi Licensure in Algebra/Geometry, and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Statistics (BS).

  • General Requirements:

To receive the BS or BSED degree, a student must maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 and at least 2.5 in all core mathematics or statistics and English courses. The total number of hours of coursework for the BS or BSED is at least 120 or 124 semester hours, respectively. In addition, to receive the BSED degree a student must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program which is sought through the College of Education and Human Development. Students interested in entering teacher education should see the Requirements for Admission to Teacher Education in the current issue of the Jackson State University Undergraduate Catalog under the College of Education and Human Development.

  • Curriculum:

The general curriculum for the BS degree in mathematics, the BS degree in statistics, and the BSED degree in mathematics education consists of completing academic coursework in General Education Core courses, General Education Pathway courses, University Required courses, Degree Program Requirements courses, Electives, and Professional Concentrations courses. The detail coursework requirements in each category are given under the Academics section and can be perused by clicking on the Academics link as you go through the website.

Graduate Programs

The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences offers a doctoral degree concentration in computational mathematics and statistical sciences through the College of Science, Engineering and Technology Ph.D. program in Computational Data Enabled Sciences and Engineering (CDS&E). The Department also offers programs leading to the MS degree in Pure or Applied Mathematics for students who seek careers in academia, government, industry, or the business sector, and the MS degree in CDS&E. The programs are designed for persons with adequate background in undergraduate statistics and mathematics beyond the calculus sequence.

  • General Requirements:

To receive the Ph.D. degree in CDS&E, a student must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 in all Common Core courses = 12 credit hours, Track Requirement courses = 12 credit hours, Track electives courses = 24 credit hours, and Dissertation = Not more than 24 credit hours. Additionally, the student must be formally admitted to degree candidacy doctoral through the Qualifying Exams, and must take and pass the Graduate Area Comprehensive Exams, and successfully complete and defend a dissertation publicly.

The M.S. degree in mathematics and CDS&E are essentially transitional to the doctoral program in the mathematical sciences and CDS&E. The M.S. degree in mathematics can be completed with only coursework; a Thesis or Project is optional. The M.S. degree in CDS&E can only be completed with either a Thesis or Project. However, all the programs are designed to meet academic requirements for students who are interested in seeking degrees beyond the master level.

The details about the requirements for the graduate programs can be perused by linking to the Academics section as you go through the website.
