The 2023 United States General Election features gubernatorial and state legislative elections in four states. Among those four states is Mississippi, where all statewide offices will be contested.

MEET THE PANELISTS

Dr. Ray Mikell
Assistant Professor of Political Science, Jackson State University
Dr. Mikell serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Jackson State University (JSU). His teaching and research interests include American politics and government, primarily at state and local levels. Prior to joining JSU in 2012, he served as a visiting professor at the University of New Orleans and as an instructor at Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia.  At JSU, Dr. Mikell leads courses in urban politics, the American presidency, civil rights and liberties, and other American and comparative politics.
Dr. Eric R. Schmidt
Assistant Professor of Government and Politics, Millsaps College
Dr. Eric R. Schmidt is an assistant professor of government and politics at Millsaps College. He received his doctoral degree from Indiana University. Before his appointment as faculty at Millsaps College, Dr. Schmidt taught at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. At Millsaps, Dr. Schmidt teaches courses on American politics, political parties and interest groups, research methods and political philosophy. His research examines how partisan polarization has influenced the way Americans think about and identify with political parties. 
Dr. Maruice Mangum
Chair of the Department of Political Science, Jackson State University  

Dr. Mangum is an American political scholar who specializes in African-American politics, race and politics and political behavior. His research lies at the intersection of racial identity, intergroup relations, political opinions and political psychology. Dr. Mangum earned a Bachelor of Political Science degree from the University of Iowa, a Master of Arts in Political Science degree from Ohio State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science degree from Louisiana State University.  

Jacobi M. Grant, Esq.
Adjunct Professor & Research Compliance Officer 
Jackson State University Division of Research & Economic Development
Professor Jacobi M. Grant is a licensed attorney who earned a Bachelor of Political Science in Criminal Justice and Corrective Services degree from Jackson State University. The Lake County, Illinois native is a 2016 graduate of Mississippi College School of Law. Grant serves as an adjunct professor at Jackson State University and leads courses in the Department of Criminal Justice and the Department of Political Science. Professor Grant is an academic scholar in the areas of American government and constitutional law, criminal justice, criminology and criminal rehabilitation theory, judicial process and political philosophy.
Kennadie Boykin
Senior Political Science Major, Jackson State University 
Mississippi Votes President, JSU Chapter
Kennadie Boykin is a senior political science major at Jackson State University. Her educational emphasis is in legal studies. The St. Louis, Missouri native serves as the president of the Jackson State University chapter of Mississippi Votes, a program that develops outreach strategies to empower young people and promote civic engagement through targeted grassroot efforts.
Sollie B. Norwood, Mississippi State Senator
Sollie B. Norwood has served as a Mississippi state senator from the 28th district since 2013. The 28th district in Hinds County covers parts of south and west Jackson, including Jackson State University. He is a member of the JSU National Alumni Association, the Jackson, Mississippi chapter of the NAACP, and a life member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated.
