Assessment Glossary

The Assessment Glossary contains key assessment terms related specifically to issues of higher education. It is provided to promote the use of assessment jargon and not as a guide to the assessment process. Please note that there is no standardized assessment vocabulary and the usage of terms may vary. This web-based document is a compendium of selected assessment-related terms found in glossaries published by the following higher education institutions and associations: California State University at Stanislaus, James Madison University, New Horizons for Learning, Michigan State University, Millersville University, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Nebraska at Kearney, University of Georgia Athens, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and 2001 Accreditations Handbook.

Assessment Manual

This Assessment Manual is adapted from the manual developed in 2010 by the Offices of Academic Affairs/Student Life and Assessment Planning and Knowledge Management. Updated by the Department of Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment to guide practitioners through the process of outcomes based assessment, this manual focuses on assessment at the program or unit level and should prove particularly useful to constituents intimately involved in the assessment process, review, and improvement. This document is compiled from various educational sources and reflects current best practices in assessment of student learning outcomes and program goals.
