C.R.E.A.T. E. Project

Welcome to the C.R.E.A.T. E. Project 

 The purpose of the Community Resilience Engaging Advanced Training and Education (C.R.E.A.T.E) will be to enhance the fields of Emergency Management (Technology concentration), Computer Science, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, and Psychology so that underrepresented undergraduate minority students are highly qualified and prepared to successfully enter graduate programs and/or careers in Emergency Management with the S.T.E.M. emphasis, specifically, Emergency Management and/or Disaster Preparedness. It also informs and transforms the larger academic community about issues relevant to Emergency Management and/or Disaster Preparedness.

Objectives

  1. To improve the retention and persistence of Undergraduate Minority Students and promote a multi-disciplinary approach in the fields of Emergency Management (Technology emphasis), Computer Science, Psychology and Meteorology and Atmospheric Science course offering and activities (Emergency & Disaster Preparedness focused),
  2. To increase students’ knowledge base, research skills, and awareness of Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness.
  3. To enhance the S.T.E.M. curriculum by creating a Disaster Preparedness & Resilience course to increase the knowledge base,
  4. To establish a state-of–the-art Disaster Preparedness & Resilience teaching and research laboratory, and to
  5. To promote ho w technology identifies threats quickly and allows professionals to use new tools in reaching individuals during an emergency, from weather-related threats and etc.

 

About C.R.E.A.T.E.

  • Mission: “Our mission is to provide contemporary emergency/disaster management and preparedness education and training related to natural disasters (i.e. weather and atmospheric events) for Mississippi’s underserved communities; to mitigate loss through effective preparedness and response planning; and to building a pipeline from middle school to higher education that develops future Emergency/Disaster Management Professionals and Atmospheric Scientists.”
  • Vision: “Our vision is to equip Mississippi’s underserved communities with up-to-date skills for better preparedness of natural disasters to minimize loss of life and property; thus, building resilient communities.”
  • Approach: Our approach to addressing the emergency/disaster management and preparedness needs of Mississippi is through and interdisciplinary team approach. The aforementioned problems involve many different aspects of the environment, community resources, and personal choices; therefore, it is imperative that in order to make the most meaningful impact we incorporate as many aspects as possible. Our interdisciplinary team includes Emergency Management and Technology, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, Psychology, and Journalism and Media.
