The Jackson State University Brass Quintet is a select student brass quintet that has existed for over thirty years. In those years, it has received praise for its performances in recitals and select high profile performances around campus and off site. Because of these performances, it is often one of the faces of the JSU Music Department. In order to be a member of the group, musicians are selected by the group’s faculty advisor and are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and hard work. They rehearse twice a week with their faculty advisor for a total of three hours. The current JSU Brass Quintet is made up of trumpeters, Terrence Newman and Walter Hinton, french horn player Antonio Alexander, trombonist Fred Clovis, and tubist Wesley Barrow. The group is coached by Patrick Rettger.
