Mission and Facts

The mission of the Jackson State University Department of Journalism and Media Studies is to educate and train students interested in multimedia journalism, media production, and integrated marketing communications. The department is dedicated to the development of journalists and media professionals who demonstrate accuracy, fairness and technological competence. Students are trained to be professional delivery systems of information and learn the basic principles of journalistic writing, production and multimedia platforms for the digital age. The quality of curricula in JSU’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies is designed to accomplish the mission and produce skilled journalism and multimedia practitioners.

  • The Department of Journalism and Media Studies offers a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Journalism & Media Studies.
  • The third-largest department in the College of Liberal Arts.
  • Enrollment is approximately 212 undergraduates and 25 graduate students.
  • The department consists of professional media managers, full-time faculty members with expertise in the offered concentrations, adjunct faculty who are current or former media practitioners.
  • Concentrations are integrated marketing communications, media production, multimedia journalism, and sports media.
  • The department has three labs: video, design, and journalism.
  • Remote equipment is available that allows students to complete multimedia projects.
  • The department offers a practicum and an internship.
  • The department houses JSU’s television station, radio station, student-led broadcasts, student newspaper, and student-produced magazine.
