Practicum = Practical Experience

Jackson State University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies requires all students to complete MC486 Practicum before completing an Internship.  Students enrolled in this course are placed at various on-campus media sites which include but are not limited to: JSUNN-Tiger TV, JSUTV, WJSU-88.5, eXperience magazine, The Blue & White Flash campus newspaper, University Communications and more.

Students work 8-10 hours per week during the semester they are enrolled in the course.  Students can choose to work at two locations and work 4-5 hours a week at each location. Designated supervisors at the approved work location assign various tasks and duties for the student employee, which must be completed. Evaluations are provided by the work-site supervisor to the Practicum instructor, who grades the student based on these evaluations and other criteria set forth by the instructor.

Practicum first, then Internship

Internships are to be completed outside the walls of the university. Before internships are approved, students must demonstrate their readiness by completing a practicum class. The SJMS provides opportunities for students to gain practical experiences on campus through the various media outlets, ranging from working at the eXperience magazine to JSUTV and The Blue and White Flash Newspaper. In addition, students can gain practicum credits by working with WJSU 88.5 FM.  Practicum courses are to be approved by Interim Department Chair, Dr. Luis Almeida. He can be reached at
