Message from the Chair

Dr. Mehri Fadavi, Professor and Chair

Greetings from the JSU Department of Physics, Atmospheric Sciences and Geoscience!

It is an exciting time to major in Physics, Meteorology or Earth Systems Science at JSU, the three degree programs in the department. Our department is becoming the country's primary source of African Americans who hold B.S. degrees in Meteorology and Earth Systems Science. Nationally, our atmospheric sciences program has produced one of every four African Americans who hold bachelor degrees in meteorology. Our meteorology graduates hold highly visible positions on television with The Weather Channels, WLBT and WJTV. Currently, JSU is the only HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) which, presently offering a degree in Earth Systems Science.  Our physics B.S. program provides robust curriculum with concentrations in Physics, Medical Physics, and Physical Science Education. Many of our majors continue on to graduate studies and have received degrees from major US universities.

We seek bright, talented, and dedicated students to develop into tomorrow's researchers, science teachers, corporate managers, high-tech entrepreneurs, and engineers. Our faculty members have expertise in Nanotechnology, Materials Science, Optics and Photonics, Computational Physical Sciences, Meteorological Observations, Modeling and Forecast, Earth and Space Science, and Science Education. Research in the department encompasses many areas. Our students participate in research projects in well-equipped laboratories and present the results at national conferences.
