Business Development. The primary focus of this area is the creation of economic development opportunities in West Jackson, in general, and in neighborhoods surrounding the campus. Activities include, but are not limited to, business recruiting and retention, small business training and technical assistance, microenterprise development, and business financing.

Community Development. This area focuses on the physical improvement of neighborhoods, while forming partnerships with residents, non-profits, churches, schools, government and businesses to secure resources needed in the community development process. This area is responsible for such activities as land use planning, urban design, housing development, and property acquisition and relocation.

Human Development. This functional area focuses on providing neighborhood residents with the skills and training needed to improve their standards of living. As an educational institution, CUBD works to build bridges with the public schools and university educational initiatives as well as lifelong learners.
