Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Experience, Banner, and the transition from Student PAWS.
About the Banner Student Information System
Why is JSU moving from Student PAWS to Banner?
Banner is a modern student information system built specifically for higher education. It brings registration, grades, financial aid, academic records, and advising tools together in one integrated platform. The goal is to provide a simpler, more intuitive experience for students, faculty, and staff. Students will access Banner through the academic portal, Experience.
Will Student PAWS and Banner be used at the same time during the transition?
Yes. During the transition to Banner, there will be a period where both systems are used simultaneously. Experience, the new academic portal powered by Banner, will launch in May 2026 to give the campus community time to become familiar with it ahead of registration for Fall 2026. Check the official communications in the Past Communications section for the most current task-by-task guidance on which system to use.
Beginning with the Fall 2026 semester, Experience will become the primary academic portal.
Will my current student information transfer to Banner?
Yes. Your personal information, academic history, completed courses, grades, and program information will all move into Banner. You do not need to re-enter anything. If you notice any discrepancies, contact the Office of the Registrar or the IT Helpdesk.
What browsers are supported?
Experience supports updated versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Google Chrome is recommended for the best experience. If you encounter login issues, try using an incognito or private browsing window.
About Experience, the New Academic Portal
What is Experience?
Experience is JSU’s new mobile-friendly portal for accessing student tools and academic information. It serves as the central hub for registration, grades, financial aid, advising, and personal information — all in one place through a single login.
What is the difference between Banner and Experience?
Banner is the university’s new Student Information System (SIS) that manages student data and academic processes — registration, grades, records, and course scheduling — behind the scenes.
Experience is the user-friendly portal that provides access to Banner. You do not log into Banner directly — you use Experience to access everything Banner manages. Think of Experience as the front door and Banner as the building inside.
What’s the difference between the Self-Service cards in Experience?
All three cards let students manage different aspects of their information:
- General Self-Service — Personal details (address, emergency contacts, preferred name)
- Student Self-Service — Academic dashboard (grades, profile, financial aid, degree tools)
- Registration Self-Service — Browse and register for classes
Students can also access registration from the Student Self-Service card, but the Registration Self-Service card is the fastest path.
Is Experience mobile-friendly?
Yes. Experience is fully mobile-friendly and works on smartphones and tablets. You can access all major features from your mobile browser using the same login credentials.
Getting Started with Registration
Where do I register for classes?
Students register for classes using the Registration Self-Service card within Experience. Navigate to Experience, select the Registration Self-Service card, and choose Register for Classes, then select your term.
How do I find my Time Ticket (registration window)?
Your Time Ticket is your assigned registration start time. Once it opens, you may register at any time until the add/drop deadline (provided you have no holds). Find your Time Ticket by:
- Student Self-Service → Select Student Profile → Registration Notices (top right of screen)
- Registration Self-Service → Select Prepare for Registration
What is a Registration PIN and how do I get one?
Registration PINs are six-digit codes provided by advisors or departments that students must enter to register. Each PIN is unique to the student and replaces advising holds used in Student PAWS.
After meeting with your academic advisor, you will receive your unique PIN, typically via your JSU email. PINs are issued per term, so you will receive a new one each semester. Contact your academic advisor or department if you have not received your PIN.
I thought I registered, but my schedule looks empty. What happened?
You are not fully registered until you select Submit at the final step. If classes appear as “Pending,” return to Registration Self-Service → Register for Classes and confirm by clicking Submit. Your registration is only confirmed when it shows as “Registered.”
Where do I see and resolve registration holds?
View holds by going to Registration Self-Service → Prepare for Registration → select your term. You can also view holds in Student Self-Service → Student Profile, where they appear in a highlighted Registration Notices section.
Holds can only be cleared by the office that placed them. Contact the relevant office directly for resolution.
Proxy Management — Parent & Guardian Access
What is Proxy Management?
Proxy Management is a feature in Experience that allows students to grant parents, guardians, spouses, or other designees authorized, read-only access to select academic information such as transcripts, account summaries, student grades, and more.
Students choose exactly what to share, maintaining strong privacy controls and FERPA compliance. Only students can initiate proxy access — parents or guardians cannot request it themselves.
How do students set up proxy access for a parent or guardian?
- Go to Student Self-Service → My Profile → Proxy Management
- Select Add New to add a new proxy
- Provide the proxy’s information and create a passphrase (which will be emailed to them)
- Select which information the proxy is permitted to view
Students may add multiple proxies.
Grades, GPA, and Personal Information
Where do I view my grades?
Once the transition to Experience is complete, view your grades using the Student Self-Service card → Select View Grades → be sure to select the correct term. Check current transition communications for guidance on which system holds your current term’s grades.
How do I update my preferred name or personal information?
To update personal information in Experience:
- Select the General Self-Service card
- Choose Personal Information
- Click Edit in the relevant section
- Make your changes and save
During the transition, you may need to update information in both Experience and Student PAWS. Experience will become the sole system of record once the transition is complete.
Why is my major showing incorrectly in Experience?
During the transition, there may be a delay in major changes appearing in Experience. If your major needs to be updated immediately for current-term registration purposes, contact your Dean’s Office for assistance. For future-term changes, you will be able to submit change of major requests directly through Experience once fully launched.
