25 Cities Database

The Mississippi Urban Research Center’s (MURC) 25 Mississippi Cities database is a project by designed to provide both qualitative and quantitative data on the 25 most populated cities in Mississippi. The quantitative data accessible here comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Quick Facts (v2019), which is comprised of data from the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates, American Community Survey, Census of Population and Housing, Current Population Survey, Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, State and County Housing Unit Estimates, Non-employer Statistics, and Economic Census.

The qualitative data is sourced from a survey administered by MURC in the Winter of 2020/2021 to city officials from the 25 cities. Survey questions were related to the cities’ finances/budget, community life, health, public services, COVID-19 impact, and other factors. This database is intended to inform policymakers, students, elected officials, non-profit organizations, community members, and other public administrators seeking data and research to improve the quality of life in Mississippi. It is anticipated this dataset will be updated on an annual basis to reflect the most recent available data.
