Jackson State University’s Department of Political Science helps students combine theoretical creativity and empirical research. Among the department’s areas of strength are American politics, comparative politics (particularly African politics), international relations, and public law. The department’s faculty uses diverse analytic perspectives, but their research programs share a common concern for the role of citizenship in government, political processes, and institutions.
Advisement
Students with less than 60 credit hours receive advising from and register with Ms. Eli-Sah L. Hayes (Eli-Sah.L.Hayes@jsums.edu; 60
Students with more than 60 credit hours receive advising from the Department.
Juniors (61-89 credit hours) get advising from Dr. Orey (Byron.D.Orey@jsums.edu).
Seniors (90+ credit hours) get advising from Dr. Mangum (Maruice.L.Mangum@jsums.edu).
Students who have over 60 credit hours earned register themselves. You can register yourself when we give you your Alternate PIN after we receive them from the Registrar’s Office.
Please follow your Degree Works account very closely. You access the Degree Works Dashboard via Thee Portal. While fulfilling the list of requirements, you monitor your progress.
When scheduling your courses, note that we offer major courses (200-level and higher) just once a year, except for PS 236 Political Statistics, which we offer in both the fall and spring semesters. That is, all other 200-level and higher courses are either just in the fall or just in the spring.

The Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute of Advocacy & Social Action, cosponsored by the department, conducts summer seminars on the civil rights movement as a model of participatory democracy.
