Getting Started
To ensure a successful transition to Jackson State University:
✔ Apply for admission and submit all required documents.
✔ Meet with an academic advisor to develop your degree plan.
✔ Register for classes.
✔ Apply for VA Education Benefits, if eligible.
✔ Submit all required documents to the Veterans & Military Student Support Center.
✔ Review your financial aid, scholarships, and payment options.
✔ Check your university email regularly for important updates.

Stay on Track
Success requires planning and communication throughout the semester.
Before the Semester
- Meet with your academic advisor.
- Register for classes.
- Submit required Veterans Center forms.
- Verify your enrollment certification.
- Review financial aid and payment deadlines.
During the Semester
- Attend classes regularly.
- Monitor your academic progress.
- Communicate schedule changes immediately.
- Utilize tutoring and academic support services.
- Monitor VA benefit payments and enrollment status.
Before Graduation
- Confirm degree requirements with your advisor.
- Apply for graduation by the deadline.
- Verify final certification requirements.
- Connect with Career Services for employment preparation.
Monthly VA Enrollment Verification
- To verify their enrollment, the following options are available to beneficiaries:

- Text: To verify via text, beneficiaries can opt-in when they begin using their benefits to receive a text message from VA on the last day of each month to confirm their enrollment.
- Email: If beneficiaries choose to opt out of text verification, they will receive monthly enrollment verification messages by email.
- Online: Beneficiaries can verify their enrollment through VA’s online tool.
- Ask VA: Beneficiaries can verify through Ask VA by sending a message with their enrollment dates.
Completing Registration
- Registering for classes is only the first step in the registration process. Simply enrolling in courses does not mean your registration is complete. If you do not complete your registration, you may be purged (dropped) from your classes.
- Completing registration means securing a method to cover your outstanding balance. This may include payment in full, an approved payment plan, scholarships, grants, financial aid, or other authorized funding sources.
- Once your registration is successfully completed, you will receive an email confirmation. You can also log in to Thee Portal to verify the status of your student account and registration.

Veterans Work-Study Program
Earn While You Learn
Eligible students may gain work experience while earning tax-free wages.
Eligibility Requirements
Students must:
- Be using VA educational benefits
- Have at least 4 months of benefits remaining
- Be enrolled full-time
- Be available to work up to 20 hours per week

Credit for Military Experience
Jackson State University evaluates military training and experience using recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE).
Students should:
- Request military transcripts
- Submit transcripts for evaluation
- Consult with academic departments regarding transfer credit
Military Obligations and Academic Success
Students who have military training, drill requirements, or deployment obligations should communicate with their instructors and the Veterans Center as early as possible.
Important reminders:
- Provide military orders when applicable.
- Keep copies of all military documentation.
- Notify the Veterans Center of any enrollment changes.
- Understand university policies regarding military leave and absences.
